Donald Trump once again refers to Canada as America's 51st state

Not the best of neighbors

Just a few days before a general election in Canada, Donald Trump once again retorts to kindergarten-level of diplomacy, by name-calling America's northern neighbor.

'As a state it works great'

“I have to be honest, as a state it works great,” Trump declared, as quoted by CBC. “Ninety-five percent of what they do is they buy from us and they sell to us.”

Dependent on the United States?

According to CBC, the US President also claimed that without the United States, Canada would “cease to exist” and that tariffs could go up as Washington and Ottawa work out in a deal.

This is nothing new coming from the New York mogul turned into leader of the United States. Back in March, he sat with Laura Ingraham, host of Fox News program 'The Ingraham Angle', and in true Trumpian fashion shared his thoughts about Canada.

The 51st state

“Here’s my problem with Canada,” Trump declared, as quoted by The National Post. “Canada was meant to be the 51st state, because we subsidized Canada by $200 billion a year”.

America first, America alone

The President of the United States was very blunt on his disdain towards The Great White North: “We don’t need their cars. We don’t need their lumber. We don’t need their energy. We don’t need anything.”

The 51st state above the 49th parallel?

According to The National Post, Ingraham intervened pointing out to the US President that he was being tougher on Canada, a traditional ally of America, than to some of Washington’s adversaries, such as Russia. “Only because it’s meant to be our 51st state”, Trump responded.

Governor Trudeau of the Nasty North

“One of the nastiest countries to deal with is Canada”, the US President raged on. “Good old Justin, I call him Governor Trudeau, his people were nasty, and they weren’t telling the truth. They never told the truth”.

Capital-L Liberal

Reuters reports that although Trump made fun of former Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, he admitted that it would be “easier to deal with a Liberal”.

Pierre who?

The US President criticized Pierre Poilievre, the leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, without mentioning (or apparently knowing) his name.

'No friend of mine'

"The conservative that's running is, stupidly, no friend of mine. I don't know him, but he said negative things," Trump stated on the Fox News interview, as quoted by Reuters. "When he says negative things, I couldn't care less."

The Canadian Trump?

According to Reuters, Canadian Liberals have portrayed Poilievre as a Trump-style right-wing populist who would cave in to Trump’s demands while claiming to stand for “Canada First”.

Trudeau's successor

Meanwhile, the Conservative Party is trying to link Prime Minister Mark Carney to the failures and shortcomings of his predecessor, Justin Trudeau, who was facing low approval numbers before Trump’s trade war.
