Recent data from Statistics Canada indicates a continued decline in the number of Canadians traveling to the United States, marking the fourth consecutive month of decrease. This persistent drop is causing unease regarding its effects on America's most substantial international tourist demographic.

On May 12th, Statistics Canada revealed the total number of Canadians who returned from the United States by vehicle in April 2025 only hit 1.2 million, a 32.5% drop from what was reported in April 2024 according to the government agency.

April also saw a drop in the amount of air travelers as well with Statistics Canada reporting that trips via airplanes fell by 19.9% compared to 2024. The drops in both air travel and vehicles over the border marked the fourth consecutive monthly drop year-over-year.

Interestingly, American travel to Canada has also dropped. Vehicle trips fell by 10.7% to  820,700 total trips in April 2025—the third consecutive month of decline—while air travel dropped by 5.5% with just 289,300 Americans arriving in Canada by air.

“The decreases come amid ongoing tensions due to tariffs, U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated rhetoric of making Canada the 51st state and a weakened Canadian dollar,” Sean Pevil of Global News reported. This could be a big problem for Americans.

In February 2025, the US Travel Association warned in a press release that Canada was the number one source of international visitors to the US and even a small drop in visits could result in major losses for America.

According to the US Travel Association, 20.4 million Canadians visited the US in 2024 and generated roughly $20.5 billion in spending which supported 140,000 jobs. If visits from Canada were to drop by 10%, it would result in the loss of two million visitors, $2.1 billion in spending, and 14,000 jobs.

The latest numbers of declining travel to the United States came just weeks after a poll revealed that Canadians no longer felt welcomed in the United States following Trump’s return to power and subsequent attack on Canada’s economy and sovereignty.

More than half of Canadians said that they no longer believe the United States is a safe place to travel according to polling data from Leger that also revealed a few other shocking findings.

Conducted by Leger on behalf of the Association for Canadian Studies (ACS), just days before Mark Carney visited Washington, the survey uncovered two very sad problems.

According to the data, 52% of the 1,626 Canadians surveyed agreed with the statement that “it is no longer safe for all Canadians traveling to the United States.”

Even more worrying was the discovery that 54% of respondents claimed they no longer felt welcome in the United States, which wasn't great news for Americans.

Only 29% of respondents disagreed that the US was no longer safe for Canadians while 27% said they still felt welcomed—19% said they didn’t know in both cases.

ACS President and CEO Jack Jedwab told the National Post that sovereignty concerns, the ongoing trade war, and increased border security had all played their own roles in causing worries.

“If Canadians have serious concerns about this, it has ramifications for our ongoing travel and interaction with Americans and with the United States,” Jedwab explained.

“It’s something that needs to be addressed and it’s something that Mr. Carney needs to help Mr. Trump understands,” Jedwab added ahead of Carney’s Oval Office meeting.

Jedwab went on to say there would be economic ramifications for the United States due to the way Canadians were feeling, something the US Travel Association pointed out in its February warning.

CTV News noted the data showed March 2025 was the lowest recorded crossings since March 2022, when “restrictions linked to the COVID-19 pandemic were still in effect.”
