Goals in the first 20 minutes from Achraf Hakimi and Desire Doue put the French side well on the way to victory with Inter having no answer to a relentless pressing onslaught.

Doue scored his second of the night to put the result beyond doubt just past the hour mark and late goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and substitute Senny Mayulu put the icing on the cake.

Victory represented vindication for Enrique, who becomes only the second man in history to win a treble with two different clubs, after masterminding PSG’s change of strategy.

Shedding the squad of superstars Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar represented a huge gamble, but the young team that has emerged looks set to dominate European football for years to come.

Mbappe, for his part, enjoyed a stunning debut campaign for Real Madrid following his move from PSG, but missed out on the big trophies and was forced to watch his former club succeed where had failed in the past.

The 26-year-old was in magnanimous mood shortly after the full-time whistle blew at the Allianz Arena, posting a message which read: ‘The big day has finally arrived, Victory and with the manner of a whole club, Congratulations, PSG.’

While the likes of Ousmane Dembele, Doue andKvaratskhelia will grab the headlines following mesmeric displays, former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard chose to focus on the exploits of Enrique who made this victory possible.

He told TNT Sport: Does Luis Enrique deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Carlo Ancelotti, Jose Mourinho or Pep Guardiola?

‘The answer is yes.

‘This team he has created and put together over the past year or two can beat you in any given way.

‘The talent across this squad – it is a special group of players and they’re getting coached by a special person as well.’
