SpaceX is expected to launch its Starship rocket on Tuesday evening, days after the Federal Aviation Administration approved for SpaceX founder Elon Musk to continue testing operations in South Texas.

Starship's launch window will open about 30 minutes before liftoff, or at 5:30 p.m. MT/ 6:30 p.m. CT on Tuesday, May 27, according to SpaceX. A livestream will appear 30 minutes before the ninth test flight in Boca Chica, near Brownsville, Texas.

The FAA had initially grounded the SpaceX Starship Flight 9 mission due to further investigation of Starship Flight 8, which launched March 6, but ended in an explosion, causing the vehicle to come apart and a cascade of fiery debris rained down.

In a statement released on May 22, the FAA said it had determined that "the company has satisfactorily addressed the causes of the mishap, and therefore, the Starship vehicle can return to flight."

"The FAA finds SpaceX meets all of the rigorous safety, environmental and other licensing requirements," the statement said.

Since the mishap, SpaceX said it has made several hardware changes to increase reliability and released a full technical summary of its investigation into Starship Flight 8.

"Developmental testing by definition is unpredictable," SpaceX explained on its website. "But by putting hardware in a flight environment as frequently as possible, we’re able to quickly learn and execute design changes as we seek to bring Starship online as a fully and rapidly reusable vehicle."

Where is SpaceX launching from?

SpaceX is launching its Starship Flight 9 mission from Boca Chica near Brownsville, Texas.

What is the SpaceX Starship?

Starship, the world’s most powerful launch vehicle ever developed, is SpaceX's massive spacecraft composed of a 232-foot Super Heavy rocket and the 171-foot upper stage vehicle.

At over 400 feet, Starship towers over SpaceX's famous Falcon 9 rocket, one of the world's most active, which stands at nearly 230 feet.

Super Heavy alone is powered by 33 of SpaceX’s Raptor engines. The upper section, also called Starship or Ship for short, is the upper stage powered by six Raptor engines that will ultimately travel in orbit.

SpaceX is developing Starship as a fully reusable transportation system, meaning the rocket and vehicle can return to the ground for additional missions. In the years ahead, Starship intends to carry cargo and humans to Earth's orbit and deeper into the cosmos.
