Each year, Hollywood makes hundreds of films, so many that we can miss a few hidden gems that get overshadowed by blockbusters and award-winning pictures. Be it dramas or rom-coms, some of these criminally underrated movies never got the credit they deserved. Some even got a number of negative reviews, but deserve a second chance, while others were well-received by both critics and viewers, but just never found a wide audience.
'The Rules of Attraction' (2002)

Based on Bret Easton Ellis’ classic 1980s novel of the same name, this dark satire follows an extremely pretentious group of college kids at a liberal arts school. The cast includes Jessica Biel, James Van Der Beek, Ian Somerhalder, and Kate Bosworth.
'Stardust' (2007)

This film has everything needed for an iconic fantasy flick: murderous kings, an enchanting star that takes the form of a beautiful human, and a trio of evil witches, led by Michelle Pfeiffer.
'Chloe' (2009)

Starring Julianne Moore, Liam Neeson, and Amanda Seyfried, this film is about a doctor who hires an escort to seduce her husband, whom she suspects of cheating.
'The Village' (2004)

Some critics say this M. Night Shyamalan flick was a miss, but they are not giving it enough credit. 'The Village' follows an isolated religious community that try to maintain an uneasy truce with the monsters that stalk their village. And there's a big twist in the end.
'Jennifer's Body' (2009)

This dark comedy-horror, starring Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried, might have been a mainstream miss, but it earned cult status thanks to its smart script and casting.
'We Need to Talk About Kevin' (2011)

This is not the film if you're looking for a feel-good movie. With that said, Tilda Swinton stars as the mother of Kevin. She struggles to come to terms with her psychopathic son and the horrors he has committed.
'Annihilation' (2018)

Written and directed by Alex Garland, 'Annihilation' follows a group of biologists and soldiers who sign up for a dangerous expedition to analyze an anomalous zone. The powerhouse cast includes Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny, and Oscar Isaac.
'Mississippi Masala' (1991)

Starring Denzel Washington, this low-key film explores the connection between an interracial couple in the Deep South, from its romantic start to the drama that unfolds when their romance becomes known.
'Chef' (2014)

This funny and heart-warming film is about a chef who opens a food truck. Its impressive cast stars Bobby Cannavale, John Leguizamo, Scarlett Johansson, Sofía Vergara, and Robert Downey Jr.
'Near Dark' (1987)

As a horror film centering on a farmer's son who ends up traveling with a group of vampires, how can you not be intrigued by this '80s flick?
'Perfume: The Story of a Murderer' (2006)

A movie adaptation of Patrick Süskind’s 1985 novel, it follows the life of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, a murderer with an obsession for smells.
'Sleeping with Other People' (2015)

This film is an absolute gem of a modern rom-com. Starring Alison Brie and Jason Sudeikis, it centers around two people who had a one-night stand and meet again a decade later. It’s charming, funny, and, of course, romantic.
'The One I Love' (2014)

Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss star as a couple who have trouble in their relationship. Things get weird when they start seeing a therapist to help them fix their problems.
'Sunshine' (2007)

As the Sun is dying, and the Earth too, a team of astronauts are sent to revive the sun and fail. A new team is sent seven years later as the last hope for humankind.
'Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!' (2004)

This film has the perfect recipe for a great rom-com. A small-town girl wins a date with a celebrity, and when the date goes better than expected, a love triangle forms between the girl, the star, and the girl's best friend.
