Whole of Israel under attack by devastating Iran strikes as huge conflict explodes

Iran announced the start of its retaliatory strikes on Israel, with state media IRNA stating that the counterattacks had begun. At least 21 people have been injured in the strikes so far, one seriously.

"All of Israel is under fire as Iran fires projectiles," the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed on its official X page, attaching a map with a red border showing the areas in the most danger from the strikes.

"The Iranian attack is ongoing. Dozens of additional missiles were launched toward Israel," the IDF wrote in another post minutes later. About 20 minutes after that, the IDF claimed that Iran is targeting Israeli civilians with the strikes as it shared another map showing their location — which is littered with markers.

"Israeli civilians are currently being targeted by the Iranian regime. The world cannot stay silent," the IDF wrote.

The strikes come hours after Israelis were told to stay in "protected spaces" amid fears of retaliation. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier in the day that Israelis "need to assume there will be a counterattack" as he and other Israeli authorities reportedly discussed "the price [they would] have to pay" for the initial strikes.

"Regarding the price — I said there will be a price, and we are trying to reduce it in various ways I will not elaborate on," Netanyahu said in a prerecorded video on Friday discussing the attack, according to CNN.

"But it is important for me that you citizens will help reduce it by, not being euphoric … and simply obey the instructions (of the Home Front Command) and stay next to safe spaces, because we and you want to minimize harm to life as much as possible," he added, warning the citizens of Israel of the impending danger.

The strikes were said to have struck Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Israel's Iron Dome defense system was activated, and it was reported that several of the missiles were intercepted.

Nevertheless, targets were reportedly hit, as videos and pictures show smoke rising up from among the skyscrapers in Tel Aviv.

Eli Bin the head of Magen David Adom, Israel's emergency services, said seven individuals were "lightly and moderately injured" following the strikes, CNN reported. All of the injured parties were hit in Tel Aviv and the nearby city of Ramat Gan. That total increased to 21, with one said to be in serious condition, local media reported.

A statement from the IRNA said Iran fired "hundreds of various ballistic missiles" toward Israel in what was described as a "crushing response" to Israeli attacks on Friday morning.

"Moments ago, with the launch of hundreds of various ballistic missiles toward the occupied territories, the operation of decisive response to the savage attack of the Zionist regime has begun," Iran’s official news agency, IRNA, reported, according to CNN.

Iran said it targeted primarily "military centers and air bases" in Israel. Israel launched retaliatory strikes in return, it was reported — though the missiles were said to have been intercepted over the Iranian city of Tabriz.

Some reports indicate that there are Israelis trapped in a building following the strikes, with teams working tirelessly to extract them. GLZ Radio reported that the injuries there, if any, are minor.

Just ahead of the attacks, Iranian Supreme Leader Seyyed Ali Hosseini Khameneh released a statement, according to the semi-official Iranian Tasnim News Agency.

"The armed forces will make the scoundrel Zionist regime miserable," he said, according to a translation. "The Zionist regime made a big mistake, a big error, a mistake, and the consequences of it will make it miserable, God willing."

"We must act with force, and God willing, we will act with force, and we will not compromise with them. Life will be bitter for them, no doubt," he added.

In a second round of attacks, sirens and explosions, possibly from Israeli interceptors, could be heard booming in the sky over Jerusalem early Saturday. The Israeli military urged civilians, already rattled by the earlier wave of missiles, to head to shelter.

Hours later, an Iranian missile struck near homes in the central Israeli city of Rishon Lezion, wounding 13 people, according to Israel's paramedic service Magen David Adom.

One person was in critical condition, while another was in severe condition, according to the paramedic service. Eli Bin, director of the Magen David Adom, told Israel's Channel 12 that several people were still trapped.

The Iranian outlet Nour News, which has close links with the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, said early Saturday that a wave was being launched. Associated Press journalists in Tel Aviv could see at least two Iranian missiles hit the ground, but there was no immediate word of casualties.

A hospital in Tel Aviv treated seven people wounded in the second Iranian barrage; all but one of them had light injuries. Israel's Fire and Rescue Services said they were injured when a projectile hit a building in the city.

Meanwhile, the sound of explosions and Iranian air defense systems firing at targets echoed across central Tehran shortly after midnight on Saturday, and an Associated Press reporter could hear air raid sirens near their home.

Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency is reporting a fire at Tehran's Mehrabad International Airport, with a video posted on X of a column of smoke and orange flames rising from what the outlet said was the airport.

Iran's U.N. ambassador said 78 people were killed and more than 320 wounded in Israeli attacks. Israel's paramedic services said 34 people were wounded in the barrage on the Tel Aviv area, including a woman who was critically injured after being trapped under rubble.

U.S. ground-based air defense systems in the region were helping to shoot down Iranian missiles, said a U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the measures.

Israel's ongoing airstrikes and intelligence operation and Iran's retaliation raised concerns about all-out war between the countries and propelled the region, already on edge, into even greater upheaval.
