US President Donald Trump has made numerous controversial statements throughout his political career. Yet, his latest tirade on social media could potentially be considered one of his most egregious public comments to date.

Trump slammed the Supreme Court in a message on Truth Social after the justices temporarily blocked the President from deporting Venezuelan migrants. It led him to lash out against the court and a core constitutional right.

Some context for the situation is required before looking at what Trump wrote in a late night Truth Social post. Rolling Stone noted the situation kicked off when the Supreme Court took up an emergency petition over the weekend.

The petition came from the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas, which warned that the Trump administration was preparing to deport another group of Venezuelan migrant men under Enemy Aliens Act without due process.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Texas argued that the Venezuelan migrants set to be deported had not been given a reasonable opportunity to contest their removal from the United States, an argument that played a key role in Trump’s comments.

Trump previously removed hundreds of Venezuelan men from the United States as part of his administration's hardening immigration policy. The Venezuelans were deported to what Rolling Stone called a “notorious torture prison” in El Salvador.

The previously deported Venezuelans were removed from the country without due process by using the Alien Enemy Act, a law passed in 1798 that grants a President the power to order detentions and deportations according to BBC News.

Trump has been fighting a legal battle to continue deporting those his administration believes meet its criteria for removal from the country, but he has faced challenges in the courts, which have sought to hinder this type of deportation.

A 6-3 previous Supreme Court ruling said that the Trump administration needed to notify the immigrants that they were subject to removal via the Alien Enemy Act with enough time to allow them to get a hearing.

“The notice must be afforded within a reasonable time and in such a manner as will allow them to actually seek habeas relief in the proper venue before such removal occurs,” the Supreme Court ruling explained according to Rolling Stone.

However, despite the Supreme Court’s ruling, the Trump administration was accused by the ACLU of only giving detainees 24 hours to challenge their removal. A temporary halt to deportations was ordered by the Supreme Court on April 19th.

Trump lashed out at this decision in an April 21st Truth Social post that questioned the fundamental fifth Amendment constitutional right to due process. It was a moment that should have given any of Trump's political supporters pause.

“I’m doing what I was elected to do, remove criminals from our Country, but the Courts don’t seem to want me to do that. My team is fantastic, doing an incredible job, however, they are being stymied at every turn by even the U.S. Supreme Court,” Trump wrote.

Challenging the Supreme Court

The President claimed he had “great respect” for the Supreme Court but argued that the justices didn’t want him to “send violent criminals and terrorists back to Venezuela, or any other Country” before claiming those people came to the US illegally.

“The Courts are intimidated by the Radical Left who are, ‘playing the Ref.’ Great Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito correctly wants to dissolve the pause on deportations. He is right on this! If we don’t get these criminals out of our Country, we are not going to have a Country any longer,” Trump explained.
