From zombies to Oktoberfest: 7 quirky Georgia towns WorldAtlas says are must visits
Beyond big cities and sweet tea, Georgia is full of surprises. It’s home to a huge film industry, ancient barbecue traditions, and coastline barrier islands.
That same variety shows up in its small towns, too. A new list from WorldAtlas highlights 7 quirky Georgia towns that you might not have heard of. Yet.
"Georgia has an undeniably unique character," WorldAtlas wrote. "The film and TV industry brings in over $4 billion a year, making it one of the biggest production hubs in the country."
If you're looking for a different side of Georgia, these places are worth a visit.
Senoia
The town, located southwest of Atlanta, is in Coweta County. There are many things to do in this small town, including:
- Take a tour of the town: Start your visit at the Senoia Area Historical Society and Museum, which is located in the old home of the town coroner. You'll find interesting exhibits about local history. Or, visit Georgia Tour Co. to partake a Senoia historic homes walking tour of over 50 stops
- Browse the Senoia Farmers Market: This market is held on Travis St. on most Saturdays. It is in an old cotton warehouse.
- Shopping: People can browse the many boutiques on Main St. and The Walking Dead Shop, where collectables can be purchased.
"Although Senoia's history as a town dates back to 1860, the film industry brought it fame, thanks to scenes from The Walking Dead being filmed here," WorldAtlas wrote.
Baxley
Baxley, in Appling County, is a quiet, rural town known for its family-owned businesses, slower-paced life, and natural beauty.
"Each September, barbecue lovers from around the state flock to Baxley for the anticipated Smoketember Fest BBQ Cookoff," the report wrote.
Jekyll Island

This barrier island, with 10 miles of beaches, is located on Georgia's coast in Glynn County, between Jacksonville and Savannah.
"Travelers who love sea turtles should make sure to add Jekyll Island to their itinerary," the report writes. "Travelers can visit the Georgia Sea Turtle Center daily, where they can enjoy a variety of interactive experiences and exhibits."
Helen
Helen is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains and is known for its Bavarian-style architecture and vibrant atmosphere. It is also located along the Chattahoochee River, making it great for sightseeing.
This blend of European charm and Southern hospitality, makes Helen a popular choice for travelers seeking a unique getaway. This town has a population of just 642, according to World Population Review.
Darien
"Located between Savannah and Jacksonville, Florida, the coastal town of Darien is a great spot for all things seafood and fishing," the report writes. "Travelers can embark on a fishing charter with one of the town’s local guides, such as Mad Shark Charters."
Pine Mountain
In western Georgia, Pine Mountain is home to Georgia's largest state park, Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park.
"Pine Mountain becomes energized with vacation energy as summer rolls around," the report wrote. "Travelers can easily spend a few days at Callaway Gardens, a resort and garden property spanning 2,500 acres of gardens and woodlands, with lodges, cottages, and villages available for lodging."
Madison

Madison has been ranked no. 5 by the North Carolina Travel Guides as the most picturesque small town in the U.S. Many historical attractions across the city bring tourists to visit.
This town, with a population of just under 5,000 is nestled between Atlanta and Augusta, Athens and Macon.
"The Madison Artists Guild is a good starting point, featuring a gallery with works from juried local artists," the report wrote. "Visitors can also attend a live performance at the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center, which is housed in a restored 1895 Romanesque Revival building."
Beyond Madison itself, the Ritz-Carlton Reynolds at Lake Oconee is just a short 40-minute drive away, offering additional recreational opportunities such as fishing, boating, golf, and spa treatments.
