Tips for making homemade treats for four-legged friends
DEWITT, Mich. (WLNS) – A study from the American Veterinary Medical Association says that at the end of last year, just over 45% of homes included at least one dog.
Treating furry pals like family has become a big business. For Connie Rau, big life changes and the need for healthier treats for her own Bluetick Coonhound led her to ‘Joyful Paws Bakery’.

Rau shared some tips and tricks for baking dog treats at home. She uses dog-friendly sweeteners, including honey and applesauce, in some of her recipes. Although humans can nibble them as well, the flavors are more subtle to the palate.
When using a silicone mold for special shapes, Rau makes sure to put a baking tray underneath so that the bottom doesn’t take on the indentations from the oven rack.

Another pro tip Rau shares is to dip fingers in water and then run them over the top of the batter so that it smooths the surface for decorating after the baking process.
Finally, Rau suggests frosting the treats with melted yogurt or carob chips and sprinkling them with crushed, unsalted peanuts.
