Bob’s Bites: Crudup’s Chicken & Ribs is BBQ with a cult following

A look at the wing and tip dinner with corn and jambalaya at Crudups Chicken & Ribs inside the SVRC Marketplace building located at 203 S. Washington Avenue in Saginaw on Wednesday, March 27, 2024.
SAGINAW, MI — Some spots whisper good food. Others shout it.
Crudup’s Chicken & Ribs sings a melody of smoky, juicy and bold flavors that talk to your tastebuds.
Tucked quietly toward the back of the SVRC Marketplace in downtown Saginaw, Crudup’s isn’t one of those restaurants you just stumble upon.

You either know about it, or you don’t. And if you do? Welcome to the club.
Their barbecue has a loyal following.
They now have a new item: BBQ jerk chicken. This is smoked dark meat — thighs and legs — doused in a sweet-n-spicy sauce that creeps in before your tastebuds even notice.

Don’t overlook the underrated teammate — the two slices of white bread. Just two slices sitting at the bottom of that takeout box, quietly soaking up all the flavor.
I tore mine into pieces, tucked in bits of jerk chicken, and made what I call a “sammich.” If you know, you know.
For a side, order the jambalaya.
Yes, jambalaya. Probably the only place where it’s served.
If you’re not up for chicken, order the rib tips. You can’t miss.
Finish all of this off with peach cobbler. Warm or cold, you can’t go wrong.
Bottom line: Crudup’s isn’t “jerking” around.
Go once, and you’ll be back. Go twice, and, well… you’ll just keep going.
