Lawmakers celebrate investment in affordable housing
LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — State and local leaders marked the opening of more affordable housing on Wednesday.
Governor Josh Shapiro and other leaders gathered at Farnum Street East, a newly renovated 169-unit public housing complex for seniors and disabled people.
“Over $2 million is coming in this round of PHARE funding to Lancaster,” said Rep. Ismail Smith-Wade-El (D-Lancaster). “I don’t want you to think that we’re just talking about investing in housing stock. We are investing in the social fabric of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and I believe that’s worth investing in.”
“If we want kids to succeed in school, if we want people to work and build a better life, they need a place to call home,” Shapiro said.
The renovation was accomplished partly through $300,000 in state aid. The property is one of 400 affordable housing projects that got more than $70 million in aid from last year’s bipartisan budget.
