Ship that was stuck and blocking Cuyahoga River in Cleveland has been moved

A ship that became stuck and blocked the Cuyahoga River overnight along the East Bank of the Flats in Cleveland has now been moved and the watery scene is clear.

The Coast Guard said the 406-foot vessel Sunnanvik was carrying approximately 3,500 tons of concrete when it grounded shortly before 1 a.m. A response team from Station Cleveland Harbor responded to the scene "and established a security zone around the grounded vessel."

By 6 a.m., the Sunnanvik was refloated and the waterway was cleared.

The Sunnanvik, a Canadian vessel, was making its way to the Holcim cement facility on the old river offshoot of the Cuyahoga before it was grounded, a Coast Guard spokesperson told 3News. The ship has been cleared to head to its next destination.

The cause of the grounding is currently under investigation. There are no injuries reported.

Coast Guard officials add that there was no pollution as a result of the ship running aground. There was also no impact to river traffic due to the incident taking place early in the morning.
