Why is New Mexico a Netflix production hub?
NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Drawn in by the unique character and iconic landscapes of New Mexico, Netflix has long utilized the abundant supply of local talent—both in front of and behind the camera—to bring their stories to life.
The 2003 Film Production Tax Credit brought a surge of productions to the Land of Enchantment, offering production companies a 25-40% tax credit and other incentives for filming in rural areas of the state. These credits are based on expenses and require the usage of local resources, setting New Mexico apart from other states that employ similar tax incentives for filmmaking.
After successfully producing TV series and films in New Mexico for several years, Netflix decided to open a new production hub in Albuquerque in 2018 by acquiring ABQ Studios. With eight sound stages spanning 28 acres and a rich history of productions, including “Breaking Bad,” “Sicario,” and “The Avengers” (all in part filmed on the property), this was the company’s first purchase of a production studio complex.

By 2024, Netflix had expanded this West Coast production facility to include four new soundstages, three mills, two stage support buildings, two dedicated backlot areas across 108 acres, and one production office. Part of this expansion consisted of a renewed commitment to sustainability, incorporating environmentally friendly features such as on-site solar and battery storage systems, geothermal heating and cooling, all-electric appliances, and 50 electric vehicle fast chargers.

Almost $575 million has been directly invested in New Mexico productions by Netflix since 2019. If considering other productions that have filmed at Netflix Studios Albuquerque, that figure is closer to $900 million. The company has also hired over 4,000 local cast and crew members between 2021 and 2023.

Netflix launched an interactive website in 2022, Netflix in Your Neighborhood—NM, showcasing the different productions made in New Mexico. The website encourages fans to explore filming locations around the state and access exclusive content like behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with the creatives behind the content. A recent update to the site added new titles and locations, bringing the total number of filming locations and cultural sites to 130.
