The Trump administration has begun deporting individuals to Rwanda. Iraqi national and refugee Mr. Omar Abdulsattar Ameen was reportedly the first individual impacted by the new policy. Federal authorities sought Ameen’s removal due to claims he misrepresented his background on refugee documents, although a magistrate judge found Iraq’s case against him implausible.

U.S. officials first detained Ameen in the late 2010s when Iraq requested his extradition.

A federal judge blocked extradition for lack of evidence. Deportation then proceeded on different grounds.

Reports from The Handbasket say internal U.S. communications confirm the agreement for Rwanda to accept deportees in exchange for resettlement support.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, “We are working with other countries to say, ‘We want to send you some of the most despicable human beings,’” He added that “it would be a ‘favor to us’ and that the ‘further away from America, the better.’”

Neither the U.S. Department of Homeland Security nor Rwandan officials have made public comments about the arrangement involving Ameen.
