Almost a year since announcing the long-awaited Oasis reunion, brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher will play their first show together in 16 years tonight.

The once-warring siblings are kicking things off at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, on Friday (4 July) and Saturday (5 July), before further dates around the UK, the United States, South Korea, Japan, Australia and South America.

On Tuesday, Noel was spotted by a young fan at Cardiff station, having apparently opted to travel by train ahead of his band’s first gig since 2009.

“It felt so surreal seeing a rock icon live in the flesh,” Oasis fan Joey, 16, told the BBC. “Their music has been such a big part in my parents’ life and also mine too. I can’t wait to see them live on Friday.”

'I don't think there have been this many Americans in the UK since WWII'

12:40 , Greg Evans

Josh, a fan from Philadelphia, lives in LA and travelled here with a friend for the Cardiff gig. He'd seen them twice before when he was a teenager.

“I have so many different friend groups from all over America, co-workers from LA, friends from Philly, people I’ve known for a lifetime of going to concerts and we're all at the Cardiff gig,” he tells our music editor Roisin O’Connor, who’s en route to Cardiff.

“I don't think there's been this many Americans in the UK since WWII.”

When asked how long he’s been a fan, Josh replies: “Oh my gosh, the first time I saw the Wonderwall video in 1994. I think I went out and my dad took me to the record store, got me the cassette.”

Jo Whiley recalls then-unknown Oasis on her radio show

09:01 , Press Association

DJ Jo Whiley has said she will “never forget” having a then-unknown Oasis on her radio show after she broadcast the band for the very first time.

Whiley and co-presenter Steve Lamacq played Columbia by Oasis on their Radio 1 Evening Session in 1993 - the first time the band was ever played on the radio.

She said she felt “tingles” when the group, fronted by brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher, then went on to play a live session in the studio.

Ahead of their reunion tour, which kicks of on Friday, Whiley reminisced about the early days of the Manchester-based band with fellow DJ Sara Cox, who was standing in for Scott Mills on his Radio 2 breakfast show.

Whiley said: “I remember our producers said (then-Oasis manager) Alan McGee has got this record. It's really good.

“He says this band are amazing, you've got to play it.”

Whiley said the song was Columbia, adding: “Then they came in and did a session. It was so beautiful, you can just see the star quality.

“You could feel the charisma and the tension between the brothers.

“They did Live Forever, and it was unbelievable.

What to know about Richard Ashcroft

08:01 , Roisin O'Connor

Ashcroft is supporting Oasis on the UK dates of their massive reunion tour. He’s a longtime friend of both Liam and his older brother, Noel, who supported his band ( known simply then as Verve) back in 1993.

Noel wrote the track “Cast No Shadow” from Oasis’s second album (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?, as a tribute to the Lancashire-born singer.

Placed between the band’s first No 1 single “Some Might Say” and their rock anthem “She’s Electric”, the ballad includes the lyrics: “Bound with all the weight of all the words he tried to say/ Chained to all the places that he never wished to stay.”

“[Ashcroft] always seemed to me to not be very happy about what was going on around him, almost trying too hard,” Noel once said in an interview with Select magazine. “I always felt he was born in the wrong place, and he was always trying to say the right things, but they came out wrong.”

Ashcroft said he was honoured to have inspired the song. However, asked by The Guardian in 2010 if “casting no shadow” meant he was a supernatural being, he responded: “I can’t work out if he means I’m a witch, vampire or just incredibly emaciated and thin cos, you know, I haven’t really got enough body mass to cast a shadow.”

After The Verve’s third album Urban Hymns and the accompanying single “The Drugs Don’t Work” topped the UK charts in 1997, Noel said he was “the happiest man in the world”. That same year, he called Ashcroft a “genius” and suggested their comparative lack of success to Oasis was because “circumstances worked against them”.

The Verve went through their third breakup in 2009 and have not reformed since; Ashcroft has enjoyed a successful solo career, releasing six top 10 albums including 2016’s These People.

In 2021, he shared his sixth solo record Acoustic Hymns Vol 1, a collection of new versions of songs spanning both his solo career and his time in The Verve; Liam joined Ashcroft for a duet of “C’mon People (We’re Making It Now)” from his debut solo album, Alone With Everybody.

Who are Oasis support act Cast?

Thursday 3 July 2025 18:01 , Roisin O'Connor

Cast were formed in Liverpool in 1992 by John Power, following his departure from The La’s, and Peter Wilkinson, formerly of the band Shack. They rose to fame amid the Britpop scene of the mid-Nineties and released records including their 1995 debut, All Change, and 1999’s Magic Hour.

They split in 2001 after a poor reception to their fourth album, Beetroot. The band reformed nine years later and released their fifth record, Troubled Times. Their seventh album, Love is the Call, was released in February this year and achieved a No 22 spot in the UK charts.

Gallagher is said to have described watching Cast live as a “religious experience” in an interview with the band for the Daily Record. They previously supported Oasis during their historic Knebworth shows in 1996, along with The Charlatans, Manic Street Preachers, and Dreadzone.

Oasis tour the UK and Ireland from 4 July 2025 to 28 September 2025, with all dates already sold out. They will be supported in North America by US rock band Cage the Elephant; a support act for the Australia shows is yet to be announced.

“I'm going to play that on my show tonight because we're doing this big Oasis show this evening.

“I just remember sitting there, watching them, listening to Liam singing Live Forever, and just thinking tingles, proper tingles, I'll never forget it.”

Oasis, who split in 2009 after a backstage brawl between the Gallagher brothers at a festival, confirmed their long-awaited reunion in August 2024.

Cox joked about how it was down to Whiley that Oasis have reformed after she suggested to Liam when he came on her radio show in more recent years that he call Noel.

“It's basically down to you,” Cox said.

Whiley said her Radio 2 show on Thursday evening will be an Oasis special, “just to get people excited about the gigs”.

She asked listeners to get in touch and share their memories of the band, while she will also be playing archive clips.

“It's important because they mean so much to so many people. People have grown up with them,” she added.

The long-awaited Oasis Live '25 tour kicks off in Cardiff on Friday before a run of shows in London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Dublin.

Are you, or do you know, a “Wonderwall warrior”? One of the many Gen-Zers who used their ninja-like internet skills to beat drug-muddled original fans to Oasis tickets, despite only knowing their most famous song? Wondering – aloud, online, to much gnashing of furry hood from the millions of parka dads who missed out – if they have any other good songs you should listen to before you go?

At your service. Oasis, at least up until around 1996 or so, were among Britpop’s most brazen purveyors of songwriting excellence, thundering riffs and lyrics made up on the spot about the producer’s dog. Their early years produced a veritable deluge of classics that marked them out as one of the top-tier acts in British rock history, and they sporadically tapped that same rich seam even after the drugs stopped working.

As Noel and Liam Gallagher prepare to kick off their reunion tour, Roisin and I select and rank our personal favourites, compiled on the basis that the biggest hits aren’t always the best. Apologies in advance, “Wonderwall” warriors...
