Oasis’s tribute to Liverpool player Jota

Oasis paid tribute to Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota, who this week died in a car accident, at their first reunion show.

The Manchester band, led by Liam and Noel Gallagher, kicked off their tour at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on Friday (4 July), one day after Jota was found dead with his brother, Andre Silver, in the Spanish city of Zamora.

Roisin O’Connor was at the Cardiff gig, a momentous night that support act Richard Ashcroft rather aptly described as “historic” before it started.

'Nice one for putting up with us over the years'

That’s a Liam Gallagher quote right there, just before launching into the night’s final song, a pleasant rendition of “Champagne Supernova”. Followed by a Gallagher brother embrace! It was quick, but still.

The end of the show is nigh

Noel's solo outing on “Don't Look Back in Anger” gets the most full-throated singalong of night so far – I have chills! Maybe I'm reading too much into his minimal facial expressions but Noel did look moved as he looked out at the audience singing back to him. And now Liam rejoins us for "Wonderwall". We're nearly at the end now.

It’s encore time

“The Masterplan” is first up – but you can probably guess what’s to come...

“Don’t Look Back in Anger” is next, which received (expectedly) a staggering response, followed by *drum roll* “Wonderwall”.

Oasis pay tribute to footballer Diogo Jota

An animated screen in the background flashes a tribute to Diogo Jota, the Liverpool footballer who tragically died in a car accident this week.

The back of Jota’s shirt was emblazoned on the screen during the outro for “Live Forever”.

Now things are getting ‘biblical’

The atmosphere has turned, as Liam would say, "biblical" for a euphoric rendition of "Live Forever". I reckon we've got another 35 minutes left of this show - we're surely getting "Rock and Roll Star", "Wonderwall" and "Champagne Supernova".

Liam taunts the crowd over dynamic ticket price

“You having a good time, yeah? Is it worth the £40,000 you paid for the ticket,” the cheekyt Gallagher brother says in between songs, addressing the dyamic pricing scandal when the tour was announced in August 2024.

Liam’s back

...and next up are “D’You Know What I Mean?” and “Stand by Me”, indelible verses and all.

“Stand by Me” is the tracks that feels like it’s united them the most so far, their vocals slotting together really nicely. Oasis are back, baby!

It’s Noel’s time to shine

It’s been heavy on Liam thus far, but now Noel steps into the spotlight and takes it acoustic with a stripped back version of “Talk Tonight”.

A nice reprieve for the crowd – and yes, our correspondent Roisin tells us, people are using this as a chance to run to the bar (or the loo).

But they’re quickly dashing back for the next ones, which earn the biggest singalongs of the night yet: 1998’s “Half the World Away”, which is backed up with a brass band, and 2002’s “Little by Little” – the first two songs to be played away from Definitely Maybe and Morning Glory.

The crowd basically sings ‘Roll With It’ for Liam

“How we getting on then, alright?” Liam says before tearing into 1995 track “Roll With It” – and the crowd may as well be singing the song for him. But for what it’s worth, his vocals sound crisp and pack a wallop. Good for him!

Two early tracks next

The Gallagher brothers follow “Cigarettes & Alcohol” up with a more sedate rendition of “Fade Away” before BOOM – they hit the crowd with “Supersonic”.

Roisin O’Connor, our correspondent on the ground, says the atmosphere is “very much celebratory”.

The floor is shaking for the next song

With that crunchy, snarling T-Rex-style riff, it could only be “Cigarettes & Alcohol” – and the beers go flying.

The Gallagher brothers – unsurprisingly – have the crowd in the palm of their hand, with Liam asking everyone to put their arms around each other. “You don’t need GCSEs for that,” he quips.

Perfect opening four songs?

Fourth song is another Morning Glory track – and it’s the No 1 hit “Some Might Say”.

Liam has his tambourine out for this one.

‘It’s been too long,’ Liam tells crowd

You’re telling us, Liam! He’s clearly happy to be back together with Noel, who appears somewhat emotional while delivering the lyrics to “Acquiesce”.

Then it’s into “Morning Glory” and the crowd go WILD.

Oasis arrive on stage and perform first song

For those wondering what Oasis would kick off their first reunion show with, it’s “Hello” – the first song on theit second album, (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?.

The lyrics aptly include the words “It’s good to be back” – seems so obvious now it would be this!

Roisin O’Connor, our correspondent on the ground, sums up the performance in one word: “Deadly.”

The pair settled into things immediately, arriving on stage together – and followed “Hello” up with popular B-side “Acquiesce”

This looks to be a good comeback for the lads.

Noel Gallagher spotted lurking on side of stage

What must be going through his mind at this point? He’s at the centre of the only place music fans want to be right now. Ashcroft had it right when he described the night as “historic”. I can’t imagine what Noel’s thinking here – beyond “I’m a very rich man”.

Oasis fans are on their best behaviour

There has been lots of fear mongering ahead of time that this show was going to be all gross lad culture. It’s still very early but the crowd at the moment seem to be on best behaviour.

The worst I've seen so far is a few tambourines getting chucked in the air – and a flare being let off for support act Richard Ashcroft’s “The Drugs Don’t Work”...
