Revolutionary War soldier honored by Wreaths Across America for Independence Day
COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — Revolutionary War soldier, Samuel Cooper, was honored by community members and the boy scouts in Columbus in light of Independence Day.
Cooper Creek and Cooper Creek Park both bear the soldier’s name.
The soldier was honored through Revolutionary War characters at the corner of Warm Springs and Miller Roads, in the area where his gravesite is located.
It was an effort driven by Rick Johnson with Wreaths Across America by tidying up Cooper’s gravesite
Johnson wants the public to remember soldiers like Cooper as Americans celebrate Independence Day.
“It’s not about just being on the boat, being out on the water… it’s about loving your flag, loving your country and is paying respect to people that have served in this country. We owe them a very big debt.”
Johnson told WRBL that he was also able to secure a commitment from the businessowner at the site to maintain the area and keep the flag lit at nightfall.
The lawn around the area was mowed and the boy scouts were called out to retire and replace the American flag that flew above Cooper’s grave.
