Michigan football’s top-10 cornerback recruits of the last decade

Michigan Wolverines defensive back Jyaire Hill (20) shouts at USC players after Michigan football defeated the University of Southern California at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024.
Michigan’s football program landed commitments from two cornerbacks in the past two weeks, with both ranked inside the top 150 prospects nationally.
Reeling in cornerback recruits of that caliber hasn’t been a common occurrence over the past decade, but the Wolverines’ success recruiting at the position has improved recently under second-year coach LaMar Morgan.
Of Michigan’s top-10 rated cornerback recruits of the last decade, four have been a part of the past two cycles (including the current 2026 class.)
The other high-profile prospects at the position since the 2017 class have had mixed results in a Michigan uniform.

Michigan Wolverines defensive back Jo'Ziah Edmond (16) gets set at the line of scrimmage during Michigan footballs Spring Game at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, April 19, 2025.
Here’s the top-10 of the past 10 years, according to the 247Sports Composite.
10. Jayden Sanders (Class of 2025)
Rating: 0.9176
Overall ranking: No. 229
Sanders didn’t have the type of loaded offers list as most blue-chip prospects but was still a key add last cycle for the Wolverines. He chose Michigan over other finalists Baylor and Oklahoma State. The 6-foot-2 corner wasn’t an early enrollee so likely will take some seasoning before he earns a prominent role.

Michigan Wolverines defensive back Will Johnson (2) celebrates a pick-six as Michigan football hosts the University of Southern California at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024.
9. Jalen Perry (Class of 2019)
Rating: 0.9176
Overall ranking: No. 229
The four-star prospect from Georgia was originally committed to Georgia before later choosing Michigan. He never started a game for the Wolverines over his four-year career and only appeared in six in the secondary.
8. Darion Green-Warren (Class of 2020)
Rating: 0.9176
Overall ranking: No. 229
The No. 14 cornerback in the country announced his commitment to Michigan at the All-American Bowl in San Antonio. He was one of the headliners in the Wolverines’ class that cycle but never saw the field during his two years in Ann Arbor before transferring to Nevada.
7. Andre Seldon (Class of 2020)
Rating: 0.9176
Overall ranking: No. 229
The 5-foot-8 Seldon attended nearby Belleville High and shut down his recruitment early in the process, becoming Michigan’s first commit in the 2020 class. However, he only appeared in two games over two seasons for the Wolverines before transferring to New Mexico State. Seldon was slated to play the 2024 season at Utah State but died last July in a cliff-diving accident.
6. Jo’Ziah Edmond (Class of 2024)
Rating: 0.9309
Overall ranking: No. 158
The Indiana native was a former Purdue commit before later pledging to Michigan. He was one of the biggest risers in the 2024 class, climbing more than 500 spots in the national rankings from July 2023 to January 2024. As a freshman in 2024, Edmond appeared in eight games and worked his way into a reserve role in the secondary. Expect him to compete for more playing time in 2025.
5. Jyaire Hill (Class of 2023)
Rating: 0.9333
Overall ranking: No. 166
Hill was a signing day coup for the Wolverines in the 2023 class, despite some late drama. Michigan appeared to be in a good spot for the Kankakee (Ill.) standout after he made multiple visits to campus in the fall of 2022, but he surprisingly left the Wolverines off his final five schools list heading into decision day. It was just a ruse though as he still chose Michigan.
The rising junior is expected to be the team’s No. 1 cornerback in 2025 and has the potential to become an early-round pick next spring, according to several 2026 NFL mock drafts.
4. Dorian Barney (Class of 2026)
Rating: 0.9356
Overall ranking: No. 148
The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder is Michigan’s newest commit, announcing his decision on Saturday. He is one of the most coveted prospects this cycle with 50 reported offers, but Michigan won out in the end for the versatile defensive back who could play nickel in college. Barney attends Carrollton High in Georgia, which finished 14-1 in 2024.
3. Shamari Earls (Class of 2025)
Rating: 0.9544
Overall ranking: No. 88
Earls could be in contention to start as a true freshman in 2025, despite missing his senior season in his high school recovering from a torn ACL. The 6-foot-2, 203-pound product out of Thomas Dale High in Virginia gives the Wolverines some length at the position and participated in spring practices as an early enrollee. He was a late add to the class, with Michigan flipping him from Georgia last November.
2. Ambry Thomas (Class of 2017)
Rating: 0.9583
Overall ranking: No. 90
The speedy four-star prospect out of Detroit King was a key contributor on special teams during his first two seasons, including returning a kickoff for a 99-yard touchdown. He took over as a full-time starter at cornerback in 2019, earning all-Big Ten honors after finishing with 38 tackles, seven pass breakups, three interceptions and two fumble recoveries. However, Thomas opted out of the shortened 2020 season to prepare for the NFL draft.
He was a third-round pick of the 49ers in 2021.
1. Will Johnson (Class of 2022)
Rating: 0.9924
Overall ranking: No. 15
The Grosse Pointe South grad was the crown jewel of Michigan’s 2022 class and went on to have a stellar three-year career in Ann Arbor. Injuries derailed his 2024 campaign, but he was a top contributor on the team’s 2023 national championship team.
The two-time All-American was a second-round draft pick of the Cardinals in April.
