Finale float revealed for Disney's new nighttime parade

Disney Starlight parade
It's been nearly a decade since a nighttime parade regularly made its way down Main Street, U.S.A. at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom, but that will change on July 20 when “Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away” makes its grand debut.

Friday, on a new episode of "We Call It Imagineering," Disney revealed new details about the parade, including the finale float, how they designed it and the music for the nighttime spectacular.

Tara Anderson, one of Disney's show directors, talked about the excitement of the floats.
"I am so excited about this constellation of Disney dreams that we are bringing to life. Start with the Blue Fairy to the rooftops of London, following the second star to the right. Then, we travel to the Kingdom of Roses. From there, we celebrate the Family Madrigal and the world of 'Encanto,' 'Frozen' and Elsa. Then we go to the world of 'Coco' with Miguel and Dante and Pepita. Then, 'Moana.' And finally, we get to our grand finale, our Starlight Train, who just so happens to go by the name of Whimsy," Anderson said.

From the moment the Blue Fairy’s magic wand lights up the night, dreams will come to life with an enchanting order of floats with these fantastic friends:
- The Blue Fairy
- Peter Pan & Wendy
- Asha
- La Familia Madrigal (Mirabel, Isabela, Bruno)
- Elsa
- Aurora and Prince Phillip, Tiana and Prince Naveen, Belle and the Beast, and Cinderella and Prince Charming
- Miguel and Pepita
- Moana
- Goofy, Pluto, Donald Duck and Daisy Duck, Snow White and Dopey, Rapunzel and Flynn Rider, Aladdin and Jasmine, and Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse
The finale float is home to many Disney characters. Anderson said Disney wanted the parade to be big, grand and gorgeous, but also funny, sweet and thrilling.
"Classic stories and new stories, iconic moments that I hope will really resonate with our guests and will create memories that they will treasure and talk about for the rest of their lives," Anderson said.
Danny Dillon, the senior art director of Disney Live Entertainment, explained what it takes to bring the floats to life after spending two and a half years working on the design.

"I would take parts and pieces from the blue sky meetings and create the foundation for what that design will become. Start with the pencil sketches, we go to the color renderings, we consult with the lighting, we take them to model, engineering and now, the programming," Dillon said.
In the episode, we also learned about the lighting on the floats. Bryan Chess, the senior lighting designer, said there are 50,000 pixels on one float. They want to create the starlight effect as much as possible.
"So, we can have a really fast sparkle or we can have a really slow and dense sparkle," Chess said.
Chess said it's a dream come true to create new magic for families.
As for the music guests will hear through the parade, Disney says each float is its own stage.
"Once the parade begins and it's traveling down the park, we have strategically set up these GPS zones where they've hit a point, we're going to fade out the music, give it its pause and start it," said Clint Clarke, the manager of audio systems design for Disney Live Entertainment.
The new nighttime parade will be available at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. starting July 20. The parade will begin on Main Street U.S.A. and travel along the parade route towards Frontierland to allow for better guest flow at the end of the night.
Disney Starlight will not be available on evenings Magic Kingdom hosts Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. Inclement weather could lead to the cancellation of the parade.
