Is Frontier City closing? What Six Flags closing Maryland park means for Oklahoma City

Six Flags and Cedar Fair Entertainment Co. have warned that some of their less profitable parks could face closure in 2025. While this is true for one park, it may not be the case for Oklahoma City.

During a quarterly earnings report in November, Six Flags Entertainment Corporation released its plans for "Project Accelerate." The plan promised a “comprehensive review of the portfolio to evaluate the potential divestiture of non-core assets to help reduce leverage.”

At the time, director of communications Gary Rhodes told USA TODAY that there were no plans to close parks. However, Theme Park Insider reported closures could be "on the table" from the most recent earnings report.

Now, in July, the company behind the amusement parks has announced the closure of two parks.

Here's what to know about Oklahoma City's potential for closing.

Are Frontier City and Hurricane Harbor going to close?

As it currently stands, Frontier City and Hurricane Harbor are not planning on shuttering their doors.

According to the Q1 meeting held in May, Richard Zimmerman, CEO of Six Flags, stated that the closure of a Maryland park was a "difficult but necessary" decision, and it is not anticipated that any further parks will need to be closed.

"As it relates to future divestiture of assets, we don't have any plans to close any additional parks at this time. We will continue to evaluate all options and consider other potential transactions to enhance shareholder value," Zimmerman said in May.

Why is Six Flags closing a Maryland park?

Six Flags' decision to sunset Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor, located in Bowie, Maryland, was a "difficult, but necessary one," according to the CEO. The company also announced a planned 2027 closure of it's Santa Clara, California park.

Nonetheless, Zimmerman said that it aligns with the broader priorities for the amusement business.

“After reviewing a number of options, we believe that marketing the property for redevelopment will generate the highest value and return on investment. We anticipate strong interest in the property and will continue to strategically pursue portfolio optimization opportunities as we work to unlock the full value of our portfolio," Zimmerman said.

Bowie's final operating day will be Sunday, November 2, 2025.
