Six Flags closing parks in US. Are Kings Island, Cedar Point safe? What we know
Six Flags Entertainment is downsizing.
The theme park giant created in 2024 when Six Flags merged with Cedar Fair, the owner of Cedar Point and Kings Island, will close Six Flags California's Great America in Santa Clara, California. That news came on the heels of the announcement that Six Flags America and its accompanying waterpark, Hurricane Harbor, in Maryland will shut down at the end of the current season, USA TODAY reports.

The Beast at Kings Island is the world's longest wooden roller coaster.
"As part of our comprehensive review of our park portfolio, we have determined that Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor are not a strategic fit with the company’s long-term growth plan,” Six Flags President & CEO Richard A. Zimmerman said in a statement.
So, what do the closures mean for the future of Kings Island and Cedar Point in Ohio? Here's what we know.
Are Cedar Point and Kings Island going to close?
Six Flags has not announced any plans to close its two amusement parks in Ohio. Zimmerman said it was not anticipated that any other parks will need to be closed at the company's first quarter meeting in May, The Oklahoman, part of the USA TODAY network, reports.
"As it relates to future divestiture of assets, we don't have any plans to close any additional parks at this time. We will continue to evaluate all options and consider other potential transactions to enhance shareholder value," Zimmerman said in May.
In fact, Six Flags has been investing in both Cedar Point and Kings Island, with new rides opening this season at each park.
What's new at Cedar Point, Kings Island in 2025?
New coasters have opened this year at each park.
Cedar Point recently unveiled Siren's Curse, billed as the tallest, fastest and longest “tilt” roller coaster in America, the Akron Beacon Journal previously reported. The name Siren's Curse comes from the mythical sirens who reside in Lake Erie and lure sailors with their singing.
And Top Thrill 2 reopened at the park this year. It debuted in 2024, but closed after a few days for additional modifications. That closure was intended to be brief, but ended up lasting the entire season.
At Kings Island, the RiverRacers water coaster opened this summer. Billed as the first and only dual-racing water coaster in Ohio, it sends thrill seekers down a three-story first drop, then propels them uphill through an identical side-by-side race course of enclosed and open tubes and 180-degree high-bank turns before hitting a final straightaway drop to the finish line pool below.
When is Six Flags America closing in Maryland?
Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor Maryland will close their gates for good at the end of the 2025 season, USA TODAY reports.
When is Six Flags California's Great America closing?
Six Flags California's Great America will not close until the end of the 2027 season, per USA TODAY, unless the company chooses to extend or accelerate that timeline.
