Turner Gulch Fire in western Colorado grows to nearly 14,000 acres; evacuations in place

MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) - As wildfires continue to consume acreage in western Colorado, officials say one of the blazes has exploded in size, ballooning from about 1,400 acres Monday to more than 12,400 acres Tuesday night.

As of Wednesday morning, that had grown even further, to nearly 14,000 acres.

That wildfire, dubbed the Turner Gulch fire, has been burning in Mesa County since July 10, but “made a pretty significant run last night,” an official told 11 News Tuesday, citing difficult weather conditions and ample fuel as reasons for the fire’s growth.

On Wednesday, fire officials hosted a community meeting for residents to receive an update on the fires. The meeting will be held at the Gateway Community Center. Click here to watch a replay of that meeting on the Turner Gulch and Wright Draw Fires Facebook page.

The wildfire is still 0 percent contained. The official told 11 News there were 122 firefighters assigned to the blaze as of Monday, and he expected that number to grow significantly Tuesday. Several aircraft are providing aerial support, including two Type 3 helicopters, one Type 2, and one Type 1.

The official said firefighters are actively defending homes and are battling the fire where it is safe.

Evacuation and pre-evacuations were issued Monday, and road closures were put in place. As of 5 p.m. Monday, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office said evacuations have been ordered for all areas of Highway 141 between Mile Markers 124 and 128, as well as 128 through 131. At 6:36 p.m. Monday, deputies also issued a pre-evacuation notice for the areas of Highway 141 between mile markers 131 and 137.

On Tuesday at noon, the evacuation orders were expanded to the area between Mile Markers 131 and 134 along Highway 141.

Crews said the fire is located near Highway 141, eight miles northeast of the town of Gateway.

According to deputies, Highway 141 has been closed from Mile Marker 120 to Mile Marker 124 due to the fire. Drivers are asked to avoid the highway unless leaving evacuation zones.

Deputies said an evacuation center is located at the Clifton Community Campus at 3270 D 1/2 Road in Clifton. While the shelter is not an overnight shelter, deputies said evacuees can be checked out and given resources, including housing, by resource navigators at the center.
