US Coast Guard Academy welcomes new leadership in Change of Command Ceremony
A symbolic and heartfelt transition of leadership took place Wednesday afternoon at the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, as Rear Admiral Michael Johnston stepped down as superintendent, passing the torch to Rear Admiral Gregory Rothrock.
The Change-of-Command ceremony brought together city officials, Coast Guard members, family and friends to honor Johnston’s 36 years of service to the nation. Rear Admiral Johnston expressed deep gratitude to his colleagues and loved ones, reflecting on the personal and professional journey that brought him to this moment.
“You’ve been with me every step of the way,” Johnston said emotionally, addressing his wife Darlene and their two children. “To my wife—you are the greatest mystery that I want to figure out for the rest of my life.”
As Johnston concluded his term, Rothrock was formally introduced as the Academy’s 44th superintendent. Rothrock, who most recently served as director of Force Development for U.S. Cyber Command, is expected to bring a forward-looking vision to the role.
“Admiral Johnston, Darlene, thank you for your dedicated service to this institution,” said Rothrock. “I’m really looking forward to all that we can accomplish together.”
Jacob Loman, the academy’s external affairs officer, emphasized the importance of this leadership shift.
“As soon as the salutes are exchanged, the new superintendent assumes command,” he said. “Rear Admiral Rothrock now has the con, and he is in charge, going forward.”
In his final address, Johnston shared parting words filled with appreciation.
“I leave this Coast Guard not with sadness, but with overwhelming gratitude, gratitude for the opportunities, for the people and for the moments that have changed my life and many others.”
As Johnston transitions into retirement, he says his immediate plans include spending quality time with his family and contemplating his next chapter.
