Bette Davis’s Oceanfront Maine Estate, “Witch Way,” Lists for $15 Million
The former Maine estate of Bette Davis, legendary actor of Hollywood’s Golden Age known for her roles in All About Eve and Death on the Nile, has been listed for $15 million. The two-time Academy Award winner and her husband, Another Man’s Poison star Gary Merrill, lived at the Cape Elizabeth property in the 1950s. The main house, which the couple dubbed “Witch Way” during their residence, spans 7,600 square feet. Beside it is a 2,000-square-foot guesthouse built in 2002.
Listing details describe Davis and Merrill’s former dwelling as having a charming English countryside setting. The nearly eight-acre plot offers groomed fields, lush greenery, nearly 1,200 feet of Atlantic Ocean frontage, and a stunning granite shoreline. The primary property consists of two bedrooms and two bathrooms that have been updated with millwork and casework. Witch Way is sprinkled with balconies, covered porches, and a classic bluestone terrace where guests can gather and unwind. The home’s carriage house also has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a kitchen outfitted with luxury appliances. Similar to the estate’s main house, it boasts a spacious balcony overlooking the property’s manicured lawns and the waterfront beyond.

During their decade-long residency, Davis and Merrill were known for relishing in the home and its seaside locale. Merrill “lobstered off the backyard,” and often hosted hockey games with his team, the “Merrill Marauders,” in the property pond, per Sam Michaud, a real estate broker of Legacy Properties Sotheby’s International Realty. “He said the best times in his life had been spent with Bette and their children at Witch Way.” The couple would later part ways with the residence following their divorce in 1960. Property records show that the famous abode was listed in 2013 before closing in 2016 for $3.75 million.
Michaud and Bill Gaynor of Legacy Properties Sotheby’s International Realty hold the listing.
