Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. aren’t just a Hollywood power couple—they’re also the proud parents of two kids: daughter Charlotte Grace, 15, and son Rocky James, 12.
It’s been nearly 30 years since the Buffy the Vampire Slayer star met her future husband on the set of 1997 horror classic I Know What You Did Last Summer , per People (and yes, Prinze Jr. is reprising his role in the 2025 reboot). In 2001, they got engaged, and the pair tied the knot one year later with an intimate ceremony near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
After they welcomed Charlotte in 2009 and Rocky in 2012, both Gellar and Prinze Jr. put their acting careers on pause to focus on raising their kids. The She’s All That actor opened up to People in 2020 about the motivation behind the decision. "I had kids and not having a dad, it was always more important to me to be a present father," Prinze Jr. explained. His father, Freddie Prinze, died in 1977, just 10 months after his son was born.
Gellar has similarly emphasized the importance of being a present parent while finding a work-life balance, telling People in 2020, “Wherever I am, I know I need to give 100 percent of myself. When I am at home, I need to put the phone down and be focused, and when I am at work, that deserves my undivided attention.”

While the pair have discussed setting rules that are “probably stricter than most,” such as not letting their kids use social media, according to People, they also prioritize character over achievements.
“I just always say to my children, 'I don't care if you're the star quarterback and I don't care if you get the best grades, I care that you're a kind and empathetic human and that's what's most important to me. And the rest will follow,'" Gellar shared with People in 2022.
Although they keep their children’s lives out of the spotlight, Gellar and Prinze Jr. have given insight into their kids’ personalities and hobbies over the years. Here’s everything to know about Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr.’s two kids.
Charlotte Grace Prinze

Gellar and Prinze Jr. welcomed their first child, Charlotte Grace Prinze, on September 19, 2009. Having been married since 2002, the couple told People they were glad they waited to have kids until their 30s.
“Becoming a parent is the most selfless act, and you need to be at a point in your life where you can give up anything and everything for a child. I don't know if you know how to do that when you're in your 20s," Gellar told People shortly after Charlotte’s arrival.
Prinze Jr. echoed her sentiment. "I'm so happy we didn't have kids in our 20s—I just didn't know a thing,” he told the outlet. “You have so much more patience in your 30s, and I feel like I appreciate this so much more."

Seven years into parenting Charlotte, Gellar posted a heartwarming birthday tribute to her daughter on Facebook reflecting on the day she was born. “In that first moment when they put [Charlotte] on my chest, I felt the most powerful love I had ever known,” she wrote, adding that her firstborn was “the kindest, most loving, nurturing little girl” she’d ever met.
In 2015, the actress joked to People that her husband had more cachet with their daughter’s peers than her when Charlotte was in elementary school. “Freddie is on [Star Wars Rebels] and so all the kids at school are like, ‘That’s Charlotte’s daddy. He’s a Jedi. And that’s her mom, she drives carpool.’” Gellar told the outlet. “I was like, ‘I’ve got to get come cred with these kids!’” she added.
Now that Charlotte’s a teenager, the Scooby-Doo alum has gotten some clout from sharing beauty tips with her daughter and friends during a birthday sleepover. “Sometimes [Charlotte] tells me, 'Oh mom, no one does that anymore,' and then her friends will be like, 'Well, actually, that's really good,'" she recalled to People in 2024.
The pair also enjoy regular mother-daughter bonding time. Besides going to Taylor Swift concerts and taking picturesque family vacations to Italy, Charlotte’s hit Tinseltown with her mom. She attended a screening of Gellar’s Netflix film Do Revenge in September 2022. While the 15-year-old has expressed a desire to become an actress herself one day, her parents have made her put those dreams on hold for now.
“[W]e have rules in place. [Charlotte] can’t be in front of a camera until she graduates high school,” Gellar told The Hollywood Reporter in a 2023 interview. “She says to me, ‘That’s unfair. You were a child actor.’ Yes, I was. But I was not the child of two famous parents.”

In the meantime, the teen appears to be honing her stunt skills. She executed an impressive backflip in an Instagram Reel Gellar shared for her daughter’s 15th birthday.
As for which parent she takes after, Prinze Jr. says his daughter shares his personality. “Charlotte’s more me emotionally. She’s kind of reserved and quiet at first, until she gets a sense of the room. And then depending on the vibe in that room, is going to depend on how much she opens up. That’s me,” the actor told Us Weekly in 2020.
Rocky James Prinze

Three years after welcoming Charlotte, Gellar and Prinze Jr. made her a big sister as they welcomed son Rocky James Prinze on September 20, 2012. A rep told People at the time that young Charlotte was “very excited to be a big sister” to Rocky.
While he’s only 12 years old, the younger Prinze child has already seen a few of his parent’s films—although Gellar says her kids find her and Prinze Jr.’s movies “pretty cringe.”
"I think they think they have better things to do than watch me on something, but they'll watch my friends on stuff,” she told People in March 2025. “Although my kids love I Know What You Did Last Summer."
The family’s real-life summers are thankfully less eventful than those in the slasher flick, but Prinze Jr. has noted that it takes patience to get through the school break with two teenagers. “You're definitely more necessary [to your kids], and you might feel like a chauffeur, and that's a normal feeling for a parent to go through, but you're definitely more necessary in the summer,” he told People in July 2025.

Vacations help the time pass by. Gellar took her son to Las Vegas in 2024, visiting Meow Wolf’s all-ages art installation inside AREA15. The exhibit featured a phone booth, an artifact Gellar hilariously had to explain to the then-11-year-old according to her Instagram Stories. He also accompanied her to a Los Angeles Chargers game in 2024, where he made an appearance on the jumbotron as he busted a move, according to People.

In 2020, Gellar noticed her son struggling to focus on the screen while taking classes over Zoom. She took him to an eye doctor, who diagnosed him with myopia, or nearsightedness.
"He’s also left-handed and it makes you realize the world is not set up for left-handed people," she told Today, adding, "I really feel for these kids." In the same interview, she noted that Rocky was excited to wear contact lenses, as he worried glasses would affect his ability to play sports.
In August 2024, Geller celebrated her daughter Charlotte’s first day of high school and Rocky’s first day of middle school. “Parents …. Who gets me today?!? But also…. How do I have a high schooler and a middle schooler?!?” the actress wrote in the caption of her Instagram post commemorating the milestone moment.
