Just 20 minutes from the booming Hill Country city of Boerne is a boutique town perfect for a day of antiquing, sipping on award-winning wines  and strolling a downtown area filled with budding new businesses and unique ties to Texas' Civil War history.

Comfort, Texas, aptly named by its German Freethinking and abolitionists settlers, is a quiet haven for retirees and small families but sees a persistent stream of visitors who may want to take advantage of the picturesque 19th-century craftsmanship and stunning storefronts for their next IG photo dumps.

It's laid-back atmosphere with historic vibes and modern-day delights (think apothecaries, iced-coffee and the cutest little plant shop ever) that justify a day trip.

If you're coming from the San Antonio area, you can expect a scenic and relatively short drive up Interstate 10. When traveling through Kendall County to get to the small town, you really notice how wide and expansive the Hill Country is. The tiny community is located 20 minutes north of Boerne and 25 minutes southwest of Fredericksburg.

Comfort is roughly an hour from San Antonio and Hill Country hotspots like San Marcos and New Braunfels. The "Antique" city's historic downtown, though much smaller, easily rivals the downtown district of its better-known contemporaries.

The community's estimated population is between 2,000 and 3,000 people, according to data listed online from the neighboring town of Boerne and numbers from the U.S. Census. The town offers a simialr vintage charm, fun shopping scene and rich history as New Braunfels, but while maintaining its small-town vibe.

Wine tourists might tend to skip Comfort in favor of the more popular Fredericksburg area, but one winery in town recently put the Texas wine scene on the map.

Singing Water Vineyards made history this year when it "dethroned" major California wine producers in the San Francisco Chronicle's wine ranking for best cabernet sauvignon in the country.

What to do in Comfort

For all of the love that Comfort gets from retirees, there are plenty of trendy new shops, eateries and coffee spots around the historic downtown district to attract young, hip crowds.

Antiquing is probably the number one reason people find themselves strolling its idyllic sidewalks. Visitors of all ages can find countless antique stores hidden along the compact downtown area, including the Comfort Antique Mall, which spans approximately 8,000 square-feet and is made up of several small shops.

As an officially designated "Antique Town," the vintage shopping is practically woven into Comfort's DNA. Be sure not to miss out on Shopping With Siobhain's Downright Comfort - a unique Airbnb stay and Antiquing experience located just a few minutes from the downtown area on Texas 27 if you're booking an overnight stay. Fun Fact: It's owned by San Antonio weather woman Siobhain Anders.

I recommend starting your day trip at Comfort Coffee, a super cute spot for coffee lovers inside of the 8th Street Market, which used to be Comfort's historic 1940s Ford dealership. It's the perfect place to get your morning caffeine buzz before browsing around your first antique shop for the day. Prices obviously span a range of affordability, but there are some fun, unique knick-knacks that are pretty reasonable. The 8th Street Market, which can be found near the intersection of Front Street and U.S. 87, is eclectic and cozy and is a short walk from the buzzing historic downtown area.

A lot of new-looking businesses and amenities line the highways that curve into the town's Front Street, where you can find a new donut spot, a barbershop and several gas stations all within a walkable loop. Just a short jaunt from the 8th Street Market is Verde Haven, a cute plant shop with Instagram-worthy snap spots, including an "I love plants so much" sign.

Down the road on 7th Street is probably one of the coolest downtown areas to check out. You can grab a bite or just peruse stunning Instagram-worthy streets and side alleys. On a weekend afternoon, you'll find dozens of trucks and cars lining the streets in front of vintage storefronts, young families ordering ice cream and pepperoni slices from Comfort Pizza (technically 8th Street), and browsing through more antique shops.

Founded by German Freethinkers in 1854, the town's historic value in freedom is evident. American flags and patriotic banners line just about every home, business and shop in the community, and the town is known for pulling out all the stops at its Fourth of July parade. According to longtime resident Sherry Walden, an organizer for the environmental-minded activist group Comfort Neighbors, spectators gather from all over to attend the parade.

"This celebration is emblematic of the rural, small-town atmosphere treasured by generations of Texans," Walden said.

A top attraction on a trip to Comfort, though, is the Singing Waters Vineyard. Although the winery can be a bit challenging to reach due to winding roads, the stunning views along the drive make it worthwhile. Nestled on rural roads west of I-10, the vineyard is exceptionally lush after the recent summer rains. It is a beautiful property owned by Andy and Missy Ivankovich, who received top honors this past January from the San Francisco Chronicle, in a highly competitive competition.

The vineyard also has a gorgeous farm area with cute animals (be sure to say hi to Felicia the donkey and a llama named Larry). It is known for its family-friendly vibe that typically attracts locals from San Antonio and Boerne.

This is a fun spot where you can grab a glass of wine and enjoy some yummy bites before heading back into town for more shopping.

When it's not making headlines for crowning Drew Brees as mayor, the town is known for a major Civil War landmark commemorating the brutal killing of 36 German American men hunted down by Confederate soldiers targeting them for their loyalty to the Union at the Battle of Nueces on August 10, 1862. According to the American Battlefield Trust, the limestone monument is the oldest Civil War monument in Texas. Inscribed on the 1866 memorial are the words " Treue der Union," which translates to "Loyalty to the Union."

It's hard to put into words what exactly makes Comfort such an Instagrammable location. Everywhere you look, you'll see what Hill Country folks refer to it as "character." From a downtown corridor ripped straight from a postcard, to fun little boutique shops that make you think you're in Star's Hallow (OG Gilmore Girls fans get it), it's clear the community cares about attracting tourists.
