Residents voice concerns as Esparto blast site draws curious crowds, calls for state probe

Officials have reopened all the surrounding roads near the Esparto explosion site. Residents can drive by the location, which is still fenced off, and see the aftermath that remains.

Neighbors who live near the Esparto site say they've noticed Road 23 has become busier as drivers come through to see the site. Many slow down to take video or completely stop to take pictures.

The July 1 explosion that left seven people dead. Weeks later, the property is fenced off, but among the debris, people can see twisted metal containers along with what remains of a home that once stood there.

Through the fence, people can also see pieces of guns and a box filled with ammunition. Across the road, large parts of metal are still scattered across a charred field.

Residents are wondering how long it'll take for a full cleanup as they question the status of the investigation.

On Friday, the chair for the Yolo County Board of Supervisors sent a letter to California Attorney General Rob Bonta requesting his office join the State Fire Marshal's office in taking the lead on the investigation related to the Oakdale Fire. And if applicable, any prosecutions resulting from the investigation.

"As you are likely aware, the property where the fire and explosions occurred is owned by a YCSO Lieutenant and another YCSO administrative employee. Although, CAL FIRE was brought in early to lead the investigation, there is a strong public perception of conflicts within the YCSO that could undermine the integrity of the on-going investigations and any subsequent prosecution of responsible parties. While we do not question the ability and integrity of the District Attorney to support the CAL FIRE and CAL OSHA investigations, ensuring the public’s confidence in the investigation and outcomes is of critical importance to the Yolo County Board of Supervisors and our community," said Dr. Mary Vixie Sandy, chair for the Yolo County Board of Supervisors in a letter.

Yolo County District Attorney Jeff Reisig also told ABC10, he fully supports the request, saying in a statement:

"This is one of those rare cases where we believe that the intervention of the Attorney General is required in order to effectively address the public's concerns about local conflicts of interest."

ABC10 reached out to the Attorney General's Office for any comment or response to the request, but we are still waiting to hear back.

Meanwhile, Esparto residents also say they agree that their office should take the lead on the investigation.
