Newport man's catch of 64-lb. flathead catfish sets Michigan record

Michigan's flathead catfish record was shattered after a Newport man caught a 64.46-pound, 45-inch fish in Plum Creek in Monroe County.

Codie Carlson was early morning bowfishing on June 29, when he brought in the state record-setting fish, according to a news release from Michigan's Department of Natural Resources.

"I thought I was about to shoot a channel catfish for dinner," Carlson said in the news release. "Turns out, I guess we do have flathead catfish in these waters."

The previous flathead catfish state-record was 53.35 pounds and 45 inches, according to the news release. It was caught in 2022 by Lloyd Tanner, of Hobart, Indiana, on the St. Joseph River in Berrien County.

Michigan's state-record fish are recognized by weight only, and fish must be weighed on a certified commercial scale and verified by a DNR fisheries biologist, according to a news release from Michigan's DNR.

While bowfishing recently in Monroe County, Codie Carlson of Newport, Michigan, caught a new state-record flathead catfish.

John Buszkiewicz, a DNR fisheries biologist who works out of the Michigan DNR’ Lake Erie Fisheries Management Unit, verified Carlson’s new state-record fish.
