NAVAL WEAPONS STATION EARLE — A partial shelter-in-place order is in effect due to “a suspected piece of unexploded ordnance” discovered on the naval base on Friday afternoon.
The ordnance is located in the vicinity of Building C-11 at the installation and the base’s explosive ordnance disposal team “is actively working to secure the item and render the area safe as soon as possible,” the base said in a statement.
Out of an abundance of caution, all personnel in buildings C-2, C-9, C-10, C-12, C-15, C-29, C-49 have been directed to remain indoors and activate “shelter-in-place plans until further instructions are received.”
Additionally, buildings C-11, C-12 and C-29 are off limits to all personnel until the situation is rendered safe by the explosive ordnance disposal team, the statement said.
The station is divided into the mainside section, which is in Colts Neck, Howell and Tinton Falls, and the waterfront area on Sandy Hook Bay, in the Leonardo section of Middletown.
The administration department is located in Building C-2 in the mainside section of the base.
