A new law in Washington State requires priests to report child abuse confessions, potentially jeopardizing the confidentiality of the confessional. Democratic Gov. Bob Ferguson (D-WA) signed the legislation, which has generated significant concerns from the Archdiocese of Seattle and multiple bishops. Catholic leaders warned that any compliance will result in excommunication.

The legislation has removed exceptions for clergy regarding information disclosed during confession. The Archdiocese of Seattle and several bishops expressed serious concerns, arguing that the law violates church doctrine and constitutional protections for religious freedom.

The U.S. Department of Justice is evaluating the law for potential violations of First Amendment rights. The examination has fueled ongoing tension between state law mandates and the sanctity of religious practices.
