According to a report issued on July 9th, soldiers from the 'REG TEAM' of the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces successfully destroyed a rare Russian remote mine-laying system located near a frontline position in Ukraine. Subsequent combat footage of the operation was released online by the unit involved and revealed what happened.

Known as the ‘Zemledeliye’ mine-laying system, or the ISDM Zemledeliye according to some military outlets. the Russian weapon was targeted with drone attacks after it was discovered, the Ukrainian military news website Militarnyi reported.

In the video footage published by the REG TEAM unit, the mine-laying system can be seen on an unknown highway before being struck by a group of attack drones. Militarnyi noted that the Zemledeliye's crew tried to flee following the initial strike, but the system failed to escape and was hit by more drones.

“One of the drones struck the cab, immobilizing the vehicle,” Militarnyi noted. More hits eventually set the ‘Zemledeliye’ ablaze and destroyed the system's cab. “The fate of the Russian crew remains unknown,” the news outlet added.

This wasn’t the first time footage featuring a Zemledeliye being attacked by Ukrainian forces has emerged since Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. A similar video was published in March 2025.

On March 20th, the then-Commander of the Ukrainian 414th Separate Brigade of Unmanned Aerial Systems, Major Robert Brovdi, revealed that soldiers from his brigade destroyed a Zemledeliye mine-laying system.

Often better known by its nickname, the 'Birds of Magyar', Brovdi’s 414th Separate Brigade of Unmanned Aerial Systems has become famous for its drone operators’ impressive feats on the frontlines, and their most recent battlefield kill was no different.

Brovdi, who was promoted to Commander of Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces in June 2025, noted at the time on his Telegram channel that a reconnaissance drone operating somewhere in the Kursk and Belgorod sector spotted a Zemledeliye mine-laying system and slated it for destruction according to Militarnyi.

The Russian Zemledeliye is a mobile mine-laying system that saw its first appearance in Moscow’s 2020 Victory Parade. It is interesting because of the method by which it distributes its deadly mines on the battlefield.

The Russian Zemledeliye dispersing mines on the frontlines by launching them across the battlefield with rockets, which has proven to be a rather effective way of littering an area with mines.

According to Army Recognition, at the center of the revolutionary mine vehicle are sets of 122mm tube launchers that have been mounted on a Kamaz 6560 military truck.

"The vehicle is outfitted with two pods, each containing 25 mine launcher tubes,” Army Recognition explained. “These tubes are arranged in a single rectangular bank, with five layers of five tubes each.” Militarnyi noted that one Zemledeliye can carry as many as 7,000 mines

“The launch vehicle accommodates 50 rockets, each [are] 122mm caliber and loaded with scatterable anti-personnel or anti-tank mines,” Army Recognition noted. “This enables the ISDM Zemledeliye to rapidly mine an area equivalent to several football fields.”

Useful on the battlefield

The Zemledeliye can fire anti-tank or anti-personnel mines to a range between 5 to 15 kilometers (3.1 to 9.3 miles), making it a rather deadly indirect weapon. However, the Zemledeliye found by the Birds of Magyar in March wasn’t helped by its range, nor was the system recently attacked and destroyed by Ukrainian special forces in July.

According to Major Brovdi, it took 2 first-person view drones to destroy the Zemledeliye that his forces targeted, something that a video released alongside his statement on the incident revealed. It is unclear how many drones were used by Ukrainian special forces in the July incident.

In the video from March, Major Brovdi explained what happened and showed the two drone strikes as well as what appeared to be footage of the Zemledeliye destroyed. However, the Zemledeliye's destruction had not been independently verified at the time.

The Dutch open-source intelligence group Oryx has been tracking equipment losses for both sides in the war since it began, and only uses verifiable photo and video evidence to do so. As of July 9th, it noted that Russia has lost 7 Zemledeliye systems since February 2022, all of which have been listed as destroyed.
