Michael Douglas has no plans to act

Michael Douglas, one of Hollywood's most iconic stars, recently revealed to the press how much he's enjoyed his free time away from work.
He won't come back unless it's special

Douglas stated at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival that he has no intention of returning to acting unless it's a "special" role, Deadline reported.
He didn't feel like it anymore

During a press conference, the actor stated that he hasn't acted in several years because he didn't want to continue.
A long career behind him

"I’ve had a very busy career," he explained, but "now, I have not worked since 2022... purposely, because I realized I had to stop."
He has not completely retired

However, the actor doesn't want to call it a retirement just yet. He's perfectly willing to return to acting if offered a role that truly captures his attention.
'If something special came up...'

"I’m very happy with taking the time off. I have no real intentions. But I say I’m not retired, because if something special came up, I’d go back. But otherwise, I’m quite happy," he shared.
'I had to stop'

Douglas also explained that he didn't want to be one of those actors who work themselves to death.
He does not want to 'die on the set'

"I’d been working pretty hard for almost 60 years, and I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set," he said.
He admires his wife's work

The actor also stated that for now, he can admire the work of his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Lucky to keep working

Finally, Douglas said that he has been fortunate to be able to continue working, as the cancer he suffered in 2010 could have slowed his career.
He could have lost the ability to speak

According to Deadline, the actor noted that he managed to avoid the type of tongue cancer that would have limited his ability to speak.
He wouldn't mind a horror movie

The actor has also considered making horror films, as it's a genre he hasn't explored before.
Just needs to find the right one

During the Red Sea Film Festival in December 2024, Douglas joked about the subject. "I still have to find a horror movie," he was quoted by Film Ink.
80 years and a mighty career

Douglas celebrated his 80th birthday in September of 2024. By that time, he had 68 acting credits, 32 as a producer, and one as a director, according to his IMDb page.

Big hits in the 80s

Famous roles by Michael Douglas include 'Fatal Attraction,' alongside Glenn Close in 1987. That same year, he created another unforgettable character, that of Gordon Gekko in 'Wall Street'. For that role, he won an Oscar as Best Actor.
A continuing presence in the 90s and 2000s

In the 90s, he also played various memorable parts. Think of 'Basic Instinct' (1992 - photo), 'Falling Down' (1994), and 'The Game' (1997).
A remarkable biopic

A more recent, remarkable role by Michael Douglas was that of the eccentric piano player Liberace in 'Behind the Candelabra' (2013).
