Federal officials investigating I-485 crash that left 6 dead: Latest details

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Federal officials are investigating a crash on I-485 in Mecklenburg County that left six people dead and one other hurt on Saturday.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol said five of the people killed -- plus the one who was hurt -- were in a Chrysler van. The other person who died was in a Honda CR-V.

State troopers said the deadly crash happened when the CR-V moved from the middle lane to the right lane, and collided with the van. After the two vehicles collided, they both went off the right side of the road and hit a parked tractor-trailer.

Officials said 16-year-old Logan Paul Sauer was driving the CR-V.

The five people who died in the van were:

  • 27-year-old Samuel Jacob Holmes
  • 23-year-old Taylor Willis
  • 8-year-old Kamron Wood
  • 3-year-old Addyson Holmes
  • 1-year-old Brynlon Holmes

A 16-year-old girl in the van survived but was taken to the hospital. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not hurt.

Troopers said no criminal charges were expected.

NTSB investigating

More than 48 hours after the crash, the National Transportation Safety Board -- or NTSB -- announced it was investigating.

While the public perhaps most often associates the NTSB with aviation accidents, the agency has authority to investigate other forms of transportation as well, including highway, railroad and boating incidents.

Once the NTSB’s investigation is done, its report should be published here. It is unclear when that will be; however, final reports are often not published until many months after the incident.

Victims’ family reacts

The father of 8-year-old Kamron Wood said losing his son left his world “completely turned upside down.”

Kamron’s grandfather said the crash was “like a big dream” that he hates.

"We came back home Saturday night and it was hard to go in the house, because all of them live with us," the grandfather said.

Only a day earlier, the boy and his grandfather went to a Lamborghini dealer because he loved cars.

“It’ll always mean everything in the world to me,” Wood Sr. said. “He was our boy.”

A fundraiser has been set up to help cover funeral expenses for the five people who died in the van. Anyone wishing to donate can do so here. As of this writing, nearly $11,000 had been raised.

A second fundraiser was also set up to help with funeral costs, as well as medical costs facing the 16-year-old crash survivor. That fundraiser had raised more than $21,000 as of the publishing date.
