It’s the second outing of Dreamworks’ notorious animal criminals, following on from the 2022 film based on the Aaron Blabey book series. Opening in the UK this month despite being out in other markets since May, this is the second film from Danny and Michael Philippou, the duo of brothers behind 2022’s Talk To Me. With writing from Bill Hinzman, this is a psychological horror film focusing on two step-siblings, Andy (Billy Barratt) and Piper (Sora Wong), brought into the secluded foster home of Laura (Sally Hawkins), who has an interest in terrifying rituals. The i Paper’s review praised Hawkins’ performance, describing it as a film “less reliant on traditional jump scares than it is on an oppressive sense of dread, punctuated by flashes of squelchy gore that will set your teeth on edge”. Designed as a legacy sequel to films 1, 2 and 3 (or should that be films 1, 2 1/2 and 33 1/3?), The Naked Gun features Pamela Anderson as Beth Davenport and Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr, the son of the original Frank Drebin. For anyone hesitant about someone else stepping in to the lead of Police Squad15 years after Leslie Nielsen’s passing, early reviews suggest there’s no need to worry about this Akiva Schaffer-directed version. Directed by Chris Columbus, this Netflix Richard Osman adaptation follows Helen Mirren’s Elizabeth, Pierce Brosnan’s Ron, Celia Imrie’s Joyce and Ben Kingsley’s Ibrahim in an essential watch if you’re looking for a new all-star film. Speaking to The i Paper about his involvement in this film back in February, Daniel Mays (playing DCI Chris Hudson) said he was struck by the calibre of his castmates. “The Queen, James Bond, Acorn Antiques and Gandhi (referring to Mirren, Brosnan, Imrie and Kingsley) – it was mad! That was a pinch-me-I’m-dreaming moment. Hopefully I’m that long in the tooth now that I can just sit there and get on with it.
