Senate Republicans have voiced concern over delays in confirming numerous nominees of President Donald Trump. Sen. Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) stated that obstruction by Senate Democrats has disrupted the nomination process and poses risks to key legislative priorities. He warned that continued delays could establish a precedent with lasting consequences.

Thune stated, “There’s a lot of noms on the list that are bipartisan." He added, “In the past, at least, as you all know, the precedent has been to allow some of those to move without having to go through the lengthy process that we’re having to go through.”

Thune said, “We’ll see at some point if the Democrats want to play ball or not, but they are playing a dangerous game and risking, I think, in the future, a precedent that could come back to haunt them.”

Thune noted that nominations for undersecretary roles in Education, Labor, and Agriculture have been especially delayed. Unlike past approvals, the gridlock has forced the majority leader to spend significant floor time on the matter.

White House Communications Director Liz Huston urged Senate Democrats to end obstruction and focus on filling key government roles. Huston said, “Senate Democrats must stop obstructing the will of the American people, and the Senate must confirm President Trump’s nominees as quickly as possible.”
