Bill Huizenga speaks on digital payments framework

Rep. Bill Huizenga (R-MI) has officially announced that he will not run for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat in 2026. His decision reportedly came after discussions with his family and President Donald Trump, marking a deliberate step back from what could have been a high-profile race. With Democratic Sen. Gary Peters set to retire, Huizenga’s departure narrows the Republican field and further positions former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI) as a frontrunner.

Huizenga said, “After careful consideration ... as well as in consultation with President Trump, I have decided against a bid for U.S. Senate in Michigan.” Reports have indicated that the President has encouraged several individuals against pursuing other political opportunities due to slim majorities in the House and Senate.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer stated that Huizenga is "incredibly valuable to the team." He added, "I'd be encouraging him to stay with it for at least another term or two because we are doing big things and he's part of it."
