Nostalgia is one of those human experiences that is as common as it is strange. At one time or another, we all find ourselves longing for pieces of a forgotten past – whether it’s our grandmother’s secret cookies or our favorite childhood TV show. But as we’re about to see, sometimes those things weren’t quite as magical as we remember them.

Some things are just perfect for the time in which they were made (and the age that we were at that time). This doesn’t mean that our favorite shows weren’t good. It just means that revisiting them forty years later isn’t necessarily going to provide us the same joy that the same show once did.

I guess this is proof that everything really is subjective. While I feel the deepest sympathy for this poor poster I do feel that maybe their experience is a particular one that doesn’t need to cloud everybody’s. If you are one of those people who did have a great time in college, that’s okay. Your experience is also legitimate.

As cliched as it is, it’s pretty true. People do have a tendency to talk up the positive qualities of the deceased and erase the bad. It seems like everyone was kind, smart, funny, and charismatic in retrospect. While I don’t think everyone was necessarily all those things, it is a nice collective instinct of ours to remember people at their best.

I suppose politics has been a platform for some pretty horrible things for about as long as politics has been around. I wouldn’t be surprised if even the ancient Greeks were yelling at each other and hurling polarizing rhetoric back and forth. I just wonder why it does always seem that it’s getting worse and worse.

It is true. If you watch the original Star Wars films now you won’t be particularly impressed by the writing, the special effects, or anything else. However, Star Wars was made in the late 1970s and needs to be judged as such. It’s extraordinary for it’s historical context. Okay, haters?

This is one of those things that you shouldn’t try today because both car manufacturing and road safety legislation have come a long way. Yet that does not in any way reduce the amount of fun that was to be derived from it at the time. Especially if you were lucky enough to have one of those station wagons with the two back-facing seats.

I’m not sure who’s out there feeling nostalgia for Pokemon Go. I kind of want to disqualify this comment just for not meeting the requirements. I mean obviously nostalgia for Pokemon Go is going to be disappointing, it’s about fifty years too early to be going back to this very recent video game.

#12: Capitalizing on Nostalgia

#1: Full Up on Full House, #3: College Trauma, #4: Post Mortem Praise, #6: A New Low, #7: An Unpopular Opinion, #9: Seat Belt? Well, I don’t know if this exactly falls into the nostalgia category. It’s more like when corporations take advantage of our nostalgia in order to make big bucks by producing a low quality product that nonetheless has a captive audience. Sorry for the depressing interpretation but I tend to think I’m right on this one.

#13: The Dino Shape Made It Tastier

#1: Full Up on Full House, #3: College Trauma, #4: Post Mortem Praise, #6: A New Low, #7: An Unpopular Opinion, #9: Seat Belt? I have to say I’m kind of offended. It’s not because I have any particular affection for Dino nuggets but I do feel that this is an unnecessary attack. I mean, Dino nuggets never pretended to be anything other than what they were. So they’re not responsible for your inflated expectations.

#15: The Golden Sponge with a Creamy Filling

#1: Full Up on Full House, #3: College Trauma, #4: Post Mortem Praise, #6: A New Low, #7: An Unpopular Opinion, #9: Seat Belt? Okay, this is a dis that I can get around. Twinkies really are nothing special. Though, maybe this doesn’t actually have much to with nostalgia. I’m actually pretty sure that Twinkies were always nothing special. I mean pretty much anyone could make a better sponge cake. I suppose it does have that creamy filling in the center…

#16: Another Outdated Nickelodeon Project

#1: Full Up on Full House, #3: College Trauma, #4: Post Mortem Praise, #6: A New Low, #7: An Unpopular Opinion, #9: Seat Belt? On face value, it seems to me that here is a person who watched Drake and Josh as a child, then watched it as an adult and expected to still enjoy it like a child. We often make this mistake of going back to our childhood favorites and forgetting that we are now fundamentally different people with different tastes.

#18: It’s a Classic

Not to put them on the same level here but I think the Star Wars principle holds up for Citizen Kane too. To a modern aesthetic of course these films seem outdated and primitive, but in 1941 Citizen Kane was groundbreaking. Just a quick disclaimer – I have not seen Citizen Kane.

#19: Super-Sized Nostalgia

#1: Full Up on Full House, #3: College Trauma, #4: Post Mortem Praise, #6: A New Low, #7: An Unpopular Opinion, #9: Seat Belt? I can’t blame nostalgia for this one. If anything nostalgia serves here as a beacon of truth, reminding us what McDonald’s once was. This is not a case of our memory’s distortion but of a product’s gradual deterioration and our collective acceptance of an inferior fast food experience. Oh to eat McDonald’s as it once was!

#21: Gotta Catch ‘Em All

#1: Full Up on Full House, #3: College Trauma, #4: Post Mortem Praise, #6: A New Low, #7: An Unpopular Opinion, #9: Seat Belt? The truth is that today there have been so many Pokemon movies that it is unclear which one the poster is talking about without knowing their age. Maybe that’s the beautiful thing about their contribution, from generation to generation there is always a Pokemon movie that unfortunate parents have to sit through.

#22: To Each Their Own

#1: Full Up on Full House, #3: College Trauma, #4: Post Mortem Praise, #6: A New Low, #7: An Unpopular Opinion, #9: Seat Belt? Wow, this person has got to have a lot of courage to put something like this out there on the internet. I suppose they have anonymity as a defence against any hate they’re gonna get but even so they’re really taking a swing against the consensus. I don’t even have the courage to comment on it. I’m just going to let it be.

#24: Play That Funky Music

#1: Full Up on Full House, #3: College Trauma, #4: Post Mortem Praise, #6: A New Low, #7: An Unpopular Opinion, #9: Seat Belt? Let’s be honest, it’s only a brand of hipsters who are still crying over the descent of the cassette tape. The rest of us are pretty happy listening to endless hours of music on our various streaming platforms. It’s just a few wannabe hippie teenagers keeping the walk-man alive. I guess they deserve a pat on the back.

#25: Nostalgic TV

#1: Full Up on Full House, #3: College Trauma, #4: Post Mortem Praise, #6: A New Low, #7: An Unpopular Opinion, #9: Seat Belt? Sometimes the nostalgia is just so strong that it actually has the power to revive something from the dead – like reviving Saved by the Bell for two more seasons in 2020. Anyway, there’s nothing like a revival to make you appreciate the thing a whole lot less, sadly, even the original.

#27: Just 70s Things

#1: Full Up on Full House, #3: College Trauma, #4: Post Mortem Praise, #6: A New Low, #7: An Unpopular Opinion, #9: Seat Belt? Kids today might find it hard to believe, but there was a time when kids used to run around the streets, go outside with bare feet, and drink water from a hose. This was mostly during the 70s and 80s. You know, a time when kids used to actually hang outside the house. But while it may be nostalgic for Boomers and Gen Xers, it isn’t necessarily something to be proud of.

#28: Stranger Things

#1: Full Up on Full House, #3: College Trauma, #4: Post Mortem Praise, #6: A New Low, #7: An Unpopular Opinion, #9: Seat Belt? What’s That?, #10: Ahead of Your Time, #12: Capitalizing on Nostalgia, #13: The Dino Shape Made It Tastier, #15: The Golden Sponge with a Creamy Filling, #16: Another Outdated Nickelodeon Project, #18: It’s a Classic, #19: Super-Sized Nostalgia, #21: Gotta Catch ‘Em All, #22: To Each Their Own, #24: Play That Funky Music, #25: Nostalgic TV, #27: Just 70s Things, #28: Stranger Things, #30: They Always Get a Free Pass, #31: Spotify is Better, #33: Casual Friday Everyday

This person just said what we were all thinking: A big part of what makes Stranger Things so good is that it’s set in the 80s, and it has a nostalgic vibe to it. If it didn’t have that unique vibe of 80s classics, like The Goonies and Ghostbusters, it probably wasn’t as good. I wouldn’t go as far as saying I wouldn’t watch it – I’d probably still watch it.

#30: They Always Get a Free Pass

The thing with nostalgia is that it gives old things a free pass just for being nostalgic, even if they don’t stand the test of time. Many older TV shows and movies are pretty ludicrous today, yet they still hold a special place in our hearts – and in pop culture – because they are nostalgic. Is that necessarily a bad thing?

#31: Spotify is Better

People are always romanticizing the idea of making their own mixtapes or getting them made for them by a significant other. And while there is something beautiful about someone taking the time to do something for someone else, there is just no competition with modern-day music streaming services. Are you telling me you would prefer to change a cassette tape every time you want to hear a different song?

While we can understand the benefits of dressing well to work, there is no denying that being comfortable is also just as important. Back in the day, if you worked in a corporate position there is no way it would have been acceptable for you to wear anything other than a pant or skirt suit to the office. Thankfully, the standards, at least in many fields, have since changed.
