Texas softball opened its Austin Super Regional series against Clemson on Thursday at McCombs Field, and the visiting Tigers held on for a 7-4 win. If the Longhorns (49-11) want to keep their hopes alive of a second consecutive trip to the Women's College World Series, they will need to beat Clemson (48-12) in game two of the series Friday at 8 p.m.

Texas infielder Joley Mitchell catches the ball at first base during the Longhorns' win over Central Florida Sunday at McCombs Field. The victory propelled Texas into this weekend's NCAA Tournament Austin Super Regional series against Clemson, which starts Thursday at 8 p.m.

Texas vs Clemson softball score updates
Final: Clemson 7, Texas 4
Reese Atwood and Katie Stewart, the power-packed duo in the heart of the Texas lineup, went a combined 0-for-7 tonight. That hurt in the final frame as Clemson holds on for the win. It's do or die for the Longhorns tomorrow, 8 p.m., at McCombs Field.
Middle 7: Clemson 7, Texas 4
Kaydee Bennett has played well since moving from left field to second base a few innings ago, when Texas coach Mike White sent Leighann Goode from 2B to SS and Katie Stewart back to left field. She gets the third putout and Texas seeks one more rally.
End 6: Clemson 7, Texas 4
Texas keeps things interesting. The Longhorns get four hits in the inning, all with two outs. Kayden Henry gets the big one with a 2-RBI single into center.
Middle 6: Clemson 7, Texas 2
Maddie Moore gets an RBI single, Julia Knowler follows with a 2-run double, Moore scores from third on a sharply hit grounder by Macey Cintron, and Texas is in trouble. Does this potent Texas lineup have a rally in it?
Top 6: Clemson 3, Texas 2
Bases loaded, no outs and pitcher Citlaly Gutierrez in for Teagan Kavan. No pressure, eh? Clemson's Brooke McCubbin got out of a similar jam last inning; let's see if Gutierrez can do the same out of the bullpen.
End 5: Clemson 3, Texas 2
Bases loaded with one out after Reese Atwood is intentionally walks, and a double play ends the Texas threat. Katie Stewart pops up to CF Jamison Brockenbrough, who fires a dart home and catches Ashton Maloney before she touches the plate.
Bottom 5: Clemson 3, Texas 2
After a leadoff single by Ashton Maloney and a double from Kayden Henry, Clemson pulls starter Reese Basinger. It will be senior Brooke McCubbin trying to put out a fire with two on and no outs.
Middle 5: Clemson 3, Texas 2
Teagan Kavan makes quick work of the Tigers. The Texas starter has retired six of the past seven Clemson batters.
End 4: Clemson 3, Texas 2
Texas goes quietly in the fourth against Clemson pitcher Reese Basinger, the ACC pitcher of the year. She's allowed two runs and four hits. As usual, she doesn't have a strikeout while letting her defense do the work.
Middle 4: Clemson 3, Texas 2
Texas pitcher Teagan Kavan can't get Alex Brown out; the Clemson leadoff hitter is 3-for-3. But she takes care of everyone else in the frame.
End 3: Clemson 3, Texas 2
Mia Scott leads off with a solo blast over the left-field wall but some nifty infield defense from the Tigers doesn't allow anything else. The difference in this game - besides one run - is the glovework.
Middle 3: Clemson 3, Texas 1
The top of the Clemson order does its work with hits by Alex Brown and Maddie Moore. Brown then scores on an infield hit by freshman Macey Cintron after Texas shortstop Katie Stewart commits her third error in four games, and some indecision by Stewart leads to bases loaded with one out. Clemson takes advantage with a 2-RBI double from freshman Marian Collins and an error in left field by Kaydee Bennett.
End 2: Texas 1, Clemson 0
Joley Mitchell bangs a leadoff double into the center-right gap, and Texas loads the bases with two outs, but Texas can't score against Clemson starter Reese Basinger, who gets Kayden Henry to ground out for the final out.
Middle 2: Texas 1, Clemson 0
Texas 1B Joley Mitchell is busy that frame with two unassisted putouts before Taylor Pipkins and Kylee Johnson get a back-to-back infield singles with two outs. But that's all for the Tigers after Katie Stewart makes a nice play at short for the third out.
End 1: Texas 1, Clemson 0
What a sequence for Texas CF Kayden Henry. She's called out on a tight play at first but replay gives her a hit. She then moves to second on a bunt single by Mia Scott and motors all the way home on a throwing error to first. Speed kills; Henry was a state track finalist back in her days at Dickinson High School south of Houston.
Middle 1: Texas 0, Clemson 0
Texas starter Teagan Kavan weathers the delay and gets three quick outs after that leadoff single by Alex Brown about 1 hour, 45 minutes ago.
Top 1: Texas 0, Clemson 0
After a rain delay that lasted about 1 hour, 36 minutes, the game will resume at approximately 9:40 p.m. with Clemson at bat in the top of the first inning. The Tigers have a runner at first with one out.
Top 1: Texas 0, Clemson 0
Uh, oh, we have a lightning delay after one at-bat (which was a hit by Clemson's Alex Brown). That's a mandatory 30-minute delay.
