Would You Visit Any Of These Houses From Movies And Television?

Houses in movies and television can be as famous and iconic as the characters themselves. Whether existing only in establishing shots or used as a set, houses play an important role in the stories we love to watch. Here are some of those iconic houses that you can actually visit.
A Christmas Story (3159 W 11th St, Cleveland, OH 44109)

This holiday classic takes place in the 1940s, and the decor of the family home reflects that. The house still stands, and it is now an Airbnb—you can actually sleep in Ralphie’s room.
New Girl (836 Traction Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90013)

Interiors for the apartment in New Girl were shot on a soundstage, but the establishing shots are of a building in downtown Los Angeles. As it’s a private residential building, visiting it really just means seeing it from the outside, unless you want to rent a unit.
Bird Box (304 N Canyon Blvd, Monrovia, CA 91016)

This house was featured in the thriller Bird Box and can be found outside Los Angeles. According to the owner, the house has been featured in three other movies as well.
Boy Meets World (4196 Colfax Ave, Studio City, CA 91604)

This is a regular suburban home, and although it’s located in Studio City, California, it’s a real house. Sold for $1.5 million in 2016, it is easily accessible but remains a private residence.
Hocus Pocus (318 Essex St, Salem, MA 01970)

This Colonial house in Salem, MA, is well-suited as a witch’s residence, but it is very much a real home. The house is now a museum and is open to the public.
Breaking Bad (3828 Piermont Dr NE, Albuquerque, NM 87111)

Walter White's house is real, right there in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The owners understand people want to see it. However, they do want people to stop throwing whole pizzas onto their roof.
Dexter (1155 103rd St (At Bay Harbor Club), Miami Beach, FL 33154)

This drama was filmed in Long Beach, California, but Dexter’s apartment complex exists in Miami Beach, Florida. The building is called the Bay Harbor Club condos, and only members are permitted on the grounds.
Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone (12 Picket Post Close, Winkfield Row, Bracknell RG12 9FG)

For the first Harry Potter film, this house was used for the exterior shots of Harry’s house. The interiors themselves were shot on a soundstage at Warner Brothers Studios in the UK. You can visit the studios, but probably won’t find any of the sets still standing.
Silence Of The Lambs (8 Circle St, Layton, Perryopolis, Pennsylvania 15473)

Would you want to visit Buffalo Bill’s house? It’s located in rural Pennsylvania, so it takes a bit of a drive to find. However, if you’re hoping to get a look at the basement, you should know that those scenes were shot on a soundstage far away from this house.
Sabrina The Teenage Witch (64 E Main St, Freehold, NJ 07728)

Spellman Manor is an actual building, although it’s not called that in real life. If you want to make a pilgrimage to Freehold, New Jersey, you can visit this house, which in actuality is rented out to several local businesses. The inside is accessible, but it won’t look anything like the interiors of the show.
The Holiday (1883 Orlando Rd, San Marino, CA 91108)

The 10,324-square-foot mansion featured in this film is located in San Marino, California. With a pool, spa, tennis court, and full media room, it’s pretty much what you expect from a Southern California mansion.
Downton Abbey (Highclere Park, Highclere, Newbury RG20 9RN, UK)

The primary filming location is an actual castle in the UK. The grounds are open to the public as are a few of the rooms inside. It’s not open to tourists year-round, so some planning is required.
Halloween (1000 Mission St, South Pasadena, CA 91030)

The house featured in the 1978 slasher flick is a South Pasadena Historic Landmark. Now open to the public, it contains an art gallery dedicated to the movie.
Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air (251 North Bristol Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90049)

The 70-year-old home used for exterior shots is located in Brentwood, not Bel-Air. The mansion has 17 rooms, a pool, a spa, and a putting green. It’s also a private residence, and they don’t appreciate trespassers.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (4160 Country Club Dr, Long Beach, CA 90807)

This 80s teen film took place in Chicago. In reality, Ferris’ home is located in Long Beach, California. Both the exteriors and interiors were filmed at the house.
Groundhog Day (344 Fremont St, Woodstock, IL 60098)

This house is in Woodstock, Illinois, not Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Other than that, it is now a bed and breakfast called The Cherry Tree Inn, and it’s located just outside Chicago.
The Notebook (204 Martins Point Rd, Wadmalaw Island, SC 29487)

The house was renovated as part of the plot of this movie. In actuality, it was a perfectly fine home that the filmmakers made look dilapidated. The house is located inside a private waterfront community, so you would need an invitation to visit.
Home Alone (671 Lincoln Ave, Winnetka, IL 60093)

What did Kevin McAllister's father do exactly for a living to be able to afford this massive house with all those kids and be able to pay for everyone’s European trip? Both exteriors and interiors were shot at this very real house outside Chicago. Once again, it is a private residence.
Father Of The Bride (843 S El Molino Ave, Pasadena, CA 91106)

The house in this Steve Martin film is set in San Marino, California. In reality, the house is located in Pasadena, but that’s only a 15-minute drive. Like most of the houses on this list, this one is private and you can only view it from the sidewalk.
Twilight (3333 NW Quimby St, Portland, OR 97210)

The house in The Twilight Saga is almost as famous as the characters themselves. Built on a slope, it appears to be floating in the trees, and it is a very real house. It can be viewed from the street if you’re ever in Portland.
Hocus Pocus (3 Ocean Ave, Salem, MA 01970)

This 2022 reboot/sequel to the original 1993 film is also shot, appropriately enough, in Salem, MA. A beautiful waterfront property, this house is a private residence that can only be viewed from the street.
Top Gun (102 N Pacific St, Oceanside, CA 92054)

This little cottage is where Maverick waits for Charlie, sitting on the porch. Although it’s private, the owners seem to accept that somewhat and have put large photos from the movie on the exterior of the house for tourists.
Friends (90 Bedford St, New York, NY 10014)

This iconic show famously takes place in New York, but in reality, it was shot at Warner Bros Studios in California. The exterior shots of the building where Monica, Rachel, Joey, and Chandler live are a real place in Greenwich Village.
Money Pit (199 Feeks Lane, Locust Valley, NY 11560)

The titular money pit in reality was not the dilapidated catastrophe of a house depicted in the film. This private residence was recently sold for $3.5 million.
The Odd Life Of Timothy Green (155 Greenville St, Newnan, GA 30263)

This old Southern house is featured as the home of the fictional family. In real life, it was a bed and breakfast at the time of filming, and it’s changed quite a bit since it was depicted as a farmhouse.
Sixteen Candles (3022 Payne St, Evanston, IL 60201)

This traditional brick home outside Chicago was the setting for the home of Molly Ringwald's character. In 2018, the house was sold for $1 million.
Poltergeist (4267 Roxbury St, Simi Valley, CA 93063)

The house in this 1982 film was real, and it didn’t actually get swallowed up into a portal. The house pretty much looks the same today and attracts a lot of tourists. It is a private residence, however.
Roseanne (619 S Runnymeade Ave, Evansville, IN 47714)

The Conners’ working-class home exists in real life. For the exterior shots, a house in Indiana was used. It was listed in 2013 for $129,000.
Sleepless In Seattle (2460 Westlake Ave N, Seattle, WA 98109)

The houseboat from the Tom Hanks film is still around. A permanent floating home in Seattle, it sold for $2 million in 2014. It features four bedrooms and two baths and is currently a private residence.
Breakfast At Tiffany’s (169 E 71st St, New York, NY 10021)

Holly Golightly’s apartment in New York is a real place, a five-story townhome built in 1910. Located on the Upper East Side between Third and Lexington Avenues, you can’t enter the building if you don’t live there, but it pretty much looks the same on the outside.
The Brady Bunch (11222 Dilling St, Studio City, CA 91602)

The Brady Bunch house is the second-most photographed house in the US after The White House. Seriously, that’s how important that house is to our collective psyche. The interiors were shot on a soundstage, but the house “designed” by Mike Brady is located in Studio City.
Sex And The City (66 Perry St, New York, NY 10014)

Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment was a key element throughout the show’s run (and into the first movie). The building is small, and the owners have blocked the stairs with a chain and a no trespassing sign.
Stepmom (501 N Broadway, Nyack, NY 10960)

The house used for exteriors on Stepmom is currently for sale. The six-bedroom, four-bath home is listed at $3.5 million and features a view of the Hudson River and a brook with a waterfall. So, if you want to see inside, you’ll have to convincingly look like a potential buyer.
The Dark Knight Rises (Wollaton Hall, Nottingham NG8 2AE, UK)

What stood in for Wayne Manor is an estate located in Nottingham, England. The building is now Nottingham’s Natural History Museum and is open to the public.
Schitt’s Creek (308399 Hockley Rd, Orangeville, Ontario L9W 6N4)

The Rosebud Motel in this internationally successful Canadian sitcom is a real motel in Mono, Ontario, about an hour and a half drive north of Toronto. In real life, it’s called the Hockley Motel, and the current owner is looking to sell it to anyone who wants to turn it into a Schitt’s Creek-themed landmark.
