Section 9 boys gain eight gold medals at the state track and field championships

Section 9 male athletes produced five gold medals on Friday and three more on Saturday at the New York State Federation track and field championships at Middletown High School on June 13-14.

Opening Saturday action, Tri-Valley senior Van Furman was victorious in the Fed (and Class C) 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:10.41, winning by five seconds. Kingston's Andrew Lee (9:22.83) was fourth in the Fed and second in Class A. Daniel McPherson of Pine Plains was 14th overall (9:40.12), good for bronze in Class C. Furman was 14th in Friday's 3,200 Fed standings, earning a bronze among Class C runners.

Kane Poje of Tri-Valley won the Class C shot put (53 feet, 11.25 inches).

Minisink Valley and Washingtonville locked horns twice in the 1,600 relay, finishing first and second in the Class A final and 2-3 in the Fed final. For Minisink, Samuel Anderson, Robert Labarbera, Jordan Mabra and Benjamin Spevak ran 3:16.29 and followed with a 3:15.02. For Washingtonville, John Kosowicz, Cameron Snyder, Gavin Rich and Malachi Taylor ran 3:16.55 and followed with 3:16.58.

Kingston's Joe McDonald Jr. cleared 6-6 in the high jump on Saturday, placing ninth in the Fed and winning bronze in Class A. On Friday, he won the Class A long jump, clearing 23 feet, 7.25 inches on his fifth try - with no follow-up-round this year, McDonald was awarded the Fed gold.

Goshen's Jeangardy Louis won Class B silver in the triple jump (45-3.5).

Middletown's Quillar Baidy placed third in the Fed 110 hurdles (14.34, having a tenth of a second off his Friday effort).

Gavin Catherwood of Monroe-Woodbury took Class A and Fed bronze in the 1,600 (4:12.19).

Cornwall's Illunga Salerno followed his Friday bronze in the Class B 400 hurdles with a sixth overall Fed final (55.68).

Warwick's 400 relay followed Friday Class A bronze with a fourth in the Fed final (42.90).

Nathaniel Johnson of nearby John Jay-East Fishkill won the five-discipline pentathlon; his 3,737 points was good for Fed and Class A gold.

Friday's highlights

Pole vaulters Luke Beattie of Warwick and Logan Schupner of Minisink Valley maintained their 1-2 season rankings. Beattie cleared 16 feet, 6 inches and Schupner 16 feet to place first and second in both Class A and in the Federation.

Luke Beattie of Warwick won the pole vault event at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island March 8, 2025. North Rockland finished in first place and set a meet record.

Washingtonville's Malachi Taylor won the 400 meter dash Class A at 46.98 seconds - in Saturday's Fed final, he false started. Daniel Bluman of James I. O'Neill won the Class C 400 hurdles (55.20) and Ilunga Salerno of Cornwall (55.56) was third in Class B.

Brady Danyluk of Newburgh Free Academy ran 1:49.94 in the 800 meters, losing by three-tenths of a second to James Ciaccio of Saint Anthony's - Danyluk takes Class A gold and Federation silver. Bryce Kenny of O'Neill (1:53.32) was tenth overall and took silver in Class C.

The Warwick boys took bronze in the Class A 400 relay (42.07), a team of Luke Beattie Logan Conley, Ryan Sullivan and Isaiah Gonzalez.

Participating athletes come from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association; New York City's Public Schools Athletic League; the Catholic High School Athletic Association; and, the Association of Independent Schools.

Most events will be conducted within the three classes (by size): Class A, B and C. Several long-distance track and field events will be run in a combined Federation format, with class scoring split out.
