Live updates from Day 2 action at 2025 Colorado high school state track and field meet

LAKEWOOD — It's already day two at the Colorado state track & field championship meet.

The 2025 edition continues May 16 with more title action after over 30 state champs were crowned on the first day.

The middle day is shorter ahead of Saturday's all-day coronations, but there are still plenty of titles to go around.

It's highlighted by a mid-day stretch of 800 meter races and 4x200/800 relays that roll from just after noon to 3 p.m.

Colorado state track team scores

We're two-thirds of the way through the meet on the calendar, but the heavy dose of finals on Saturday means the action is just getting heating up in the team standings.

Windsor high jumper soars to silver

Windsor's Reyleigh Hess went out on a high note.

Quite literally, as the Wizards' senior finished her high school field career with a runner-up finish in the 4A girls high jump.

Hess hit 5 feet, 3 inches and broke a tie with several other athletes by hitting the mark earlier. The winner? Roosevelt's Braelyn Bailey at 5-09, a new state meet record that stood since 1999.

Fossil Ridge, Windsor relays just miss gold

There were several close calls on day two for local athletes, especially in the relays.

Fossil Ridge finished just .15 seconds back of winner Eaglecrest in the 5A girls 4x200-meter relay.

Moments later, Windsor faced the same fate except even closer at just .04 off winner Niwot's pace. Especially heartbreaking? Windsor's time of 1:38.90 broke the previous 4A state meet record and was better than Eaglecrest's winning 5A mark by practically a full second.

Timnath's Washburn settles for silver

It wasn't the gold she'd become accustomed to, but what a final kick for Timnath's Natalie Washburn.

The Cubs' senior took 2nd in the 4A 800 meters, nearly tracking down Sage Siegrist (Grand Junction Central) on the home stretch with a faster final 400.

It was still an impressive showing for Washburn, a two-time 2A state champ before moving up to 4A with Timnath this season.

Local 5A girls long jumpers fill podium

The jumps continue to be a highlight at this meet for Fort Collins athletes. It was on display in the 5A girls long jump.

Four local leapers found the podium:

• Griffey Caro, Fort Collins (5th, 17-02.75)
• Maggie Hoyer, Fossil Ridge (6th, 16-11.50)
• Addison Hayes, Fossil Ridge (7th, 16-10)
• Katie Feldman, Fossil Ridge (9th, 16-09.50)

More top-5 finishes on track

The close calls continued with some top-five finishers in the afternoon running events:

• Mia Williams, Fossil Ridge (3rd in 5A girls 800) (2:11.51, new PR)
• Jack Friesen, Liberty Common (3rd in 3A boys 800) (1:57.16, new PR)
• Heritage Christian 4x200 relay (4th in 2A girls) (1:49.06)

Mid distances and relays hit track for finals

It's a big post-lunch rush on the track, as all classifications will decide the 800 and 4x200-relay champions.

• 12:20-1:05 p.m.: 800 meter run (All classes, boys and girls, alternating every 5 minutes)
• 1:20-2:05 p.m.: 4x200 relays (All classes, boys and girls, alternating every 5 minutes)

Eaton runner DQ'd for cutting in early

Delaney Reuter is one of Colorado's top distance runners, already owning some state championship hardware.

She'll have to wait for more after it was ruled that she (and four other runners) cut in early, nullifying her 3A girls 3,200 meter title.

Reuter would have won by over 20 seconds, but instead Alamosa's Elizabeth McQuitty won in 11:17.35.

Fossil Ridge's Tatum Berg gets new PR in runner-up finish

The SaberCats' senior was oh-so-close to an epic comeback.

Trailing by a few seconds heading into the final 100 meters of the 5A girls 3,200 final, Berg turned on the jets down the final straightaway and nearly tracked down Cherry Creek's Emily Cohen.

But Cohen held on by less than two-tenths of a second for the title. Still, Berg ran the two miles in 10:27.85, a new personal best by five seconds.

Berg still has the 1,600 to go on day three, her final chance at a Colorado state title after a fifth top-five finish of her career between the track and cross country.

Thursday state track recap

There were no Fort Collins-area state champions on the first day. But there was a city runner-up sweep in the 5A high jump and plenty of podium finishes on the track.
