HGTV's 'Bargain Block' host says Detroit-based show is canceled, speaks out on what happened
The hosts of the Detroit-based "Bargain Block" are speaking out on social media about the cancelling of the HGTV series.
"We do have a few more episodes coming out in August, actually starting on Evan’s birthday,” he said, referring to his co-host and life partner, Evan Thomas. “But they are the remainder of Season 4 ’cause they did not renew the show for Season 5.”

Season four of HGTV's "Bargain Block" returned September 4, 2024 with Evan Thomas, Keith Bynum and Shea Hicks-Whitfield.
The Free Press has reached out to HGTV for confirmation but has yet to receive a reply.
On Sunday, June 22, Bynum again addressed the end of "Bargain Block" on Instagram, calling the last six months "a pretty wild journey" and indicating that HGTV decided in February not to bring back the series.
"Our entire business and lives have been put through the ringer at the hands of a giant corporation, yet we persist lol. Though you may not be seeing us for much longer on HGTV, we’re excited that we’ve built such an amazing base of followers and we’re very excited about the future,” wrote Bynum.
"Bargain Block" premiered in 2021 and became popular for its inventive transformations of ailing and abandoned houses in Detroit.
Working with Motor City real estate expert Shea Hicks-Whitfield, Bynum and Thomas redid 18 houses that first season, purchasing them for as little as $1,000 and selling them for up to about 100,000. Each episode followed the journey from dilapidated spaces to restored homes that were decorated with themes such as bohemian, safari, country estate and Detroit pride.
The first season of “Bargain Block” launched in 2021 in the thick of the COVID-19 pandemic. At that time, Bynum and Thomas said the series, which aims to help Detroit communities, wound up helping them through their pandemic stress by allowing them to focus on something positive.
Bynum and Thomas moved to Detroit from Colorado in 2017 with a goal of rehabbing houses in unique ways. On the show, Bynum was the design guru with the envelope-pushing decorating ideas. Thomas, who has a doctorate in physics, had the skills in carpentry. The show attracted a dedicated fan base and seemed poised to become a franchise. In October 2024, "Bargain Block" launched a spinoff called "Bargain Block New Orleans" that temporarily filled its regular time slot.
Now that the "Bargain Block" run is seemingly over, Bynum wrote this weekend that he and Thomas were "very excited to announce what's next soon" after sharing some hints of problems with the corporate side of the television business.
“Everyone always told us TV is a fickle world and they are very right," he wrote. "Tv is full of a lot of great people but it’s also full of some of the worst people I’ve ever encountered. Evan and I have always tried hard to stick to what we know and what we’re good at which is being ourselves.”
Bynum and Thomas have a store and workshop located in Detroit, Nine Design + Homes, which offers handmade, vintage and repurposed furniture and decorative objects.
