With plenty of outdoor attractions, Minnesota named the best summer road trip state, report says

Minnesota is the best state for summer road trips, with its frequent festivals and fairs and plentiful options for outdoor recreation, according to a recent report from WalletHub

The personal finance website ranked summer road trip states using a range of different metrics across three distinct categories: costs, safety and activities.

“Taking a summer road trip can be a very exciting way to experience a new place, but with the prices of gas, food and accommodations still impacted by inflation, you’ll want to be in a state that makes this type of vacation affordable," said Chip Lupo, a WalletHub analyst. "Safe roads are also key, and so is having plenty of worthwhile attractions to stop at along the road."

Traffic moves along Minnesota Highway 15 Friday, Aug. 30, 2019, in St. Cloud. According to state officials, traffic fatalities increased by 6%in Minnesota in 2018.

Minnesota found its way to the top of the list because it has the fourth-highest spending per capita on parks and recreation and the third-most fairs and festivals per capita during the summer, WalletHub says. It also had the third-fewest traffic deaths per million miles traveled and the 12th-lowest camping costs.

More than 75% of U.S. adults plan to take a road trip this summer, including 33% – or nearly 87 million people – who plan to drive more than 250 miles from home, according to The Vacationer, a travel guide website.
