Storm damage hits communities across Connecticut

CONNECTICUT (WTNH) — Thunderstorms hit Connecticut on Thursday evening, causing power outages for nearly 30,000 customers and bringing down trees and wires across the state.

Damage in Milford hit the community particularly hard, as trees fell in neighborhoods and other public roads.

“It was pretty wild,” Chris Yee of Milford said. “I mean I’ve definitely seen this before around the neighborhood and growing up here but never in my front yard.”

Yee came home to a tree on top of his childhood home.

“I think it’s always a possibility when you have trees, you take some down you leave some up but it’s just the nature of the beast living up here,” Yee said.

According to more of Yee’s neighbors, a family had spent nearly an hour clearing the road from trees and branches that fell during the five-minute storm.

A tree additionally fell on Exit 40 into the town off of Interstate 95, blocking drivers from being able to make it through.

Outside of Milford, more than five streets in Guilford were closed on Thursday evening due to downed trees and wires.

Two roads were closed in Branford while police and fire officials worked to clear the scene of some downed wires. The Connecticut Department of Transportation was also called to remove a tree that had fallen.

Thimble Island Road was closed between Three Elms and Wallace Road.

Residents were urged to avoid the areas.

In Norwalk, a tree fell on Bayne Street, which closed the street to all traffic while crews worked to repair the damage.
