York County grapples with flood damage after storm
YORK COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — Flooding in central Pennsylvania left York County communities picking up the pieces Tuesday.
Floodwaters destroyed several roads, ripping up pavement, knocking over trees and leaving debris. Damage especially hit the borough of East Prospect hard.
The East Prospect Fire Company said it responded to several calls into the morning, including road conditions and sinking vehicles.
The fire company asked residents to avoid the following areas until road conditions are safe:
- Willow Creek Road
- Prayer Mission Road at Willow Creek Road
- Meisenhelder Road
- Manor Road
- Abels Road
- Forge Hill Road
The fire company said there may be additional road closures, and it encouraged residents to approach traveling with caution and to not ignore road signs.
In Lower Windsor Township, officials were distributing Red Cross basement clean up kits at the township office. The kits include a squeegee, gloves and cleansers.
Video captured the scene as a creek swell rushed through a neighborhood in the township.
As crews assess the storm’s impact on the community, York County Office of Emergency Management asked residents with flood damage to fill out its damage report. Pennsylvania and the Federal Emergency Management Agency use the forms to see if the county qualifies for financial help.
Eligible damages include structure damage, foundation collapse, water in basements and living areas, private lane and bridge washouts, loss of personal belongings and water logged appliances and utilities. The form does not substitute any insurance claims.
The office is coordinating damage assessment efforts with local emergency management coordinators over the next few days.
