Ohio community honors fallen, unclaimed Navy veteran

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — An Ohio community came together Sunday to recognize a fallen veteran.

Daniel Burt Turner was laid to rest with full military honors at Dayton National Cemetery.

When considering the Independence Day holiday, the fireworks and celebrating may overshadow the sacrifices made by those who fought to protect the freedoms enjoyed and the day and every day.

Ron Galyon, with the Dayton National Cemetery, was surprised by all the support for Turner.

“I didn’t expect this many people this morning — community turnout was incredible.”

The cemetery saw dozens of people out to support the late U.S. Navy, Vietnam-era veteran.

Galyon said that Turner had gone unclaimed, with no family present, making the ceremony that much more important.

“This is our final salute. And it’s very important to honor Mr. Turner because he was a veteran that passed away with no family present.”

The funeral was handled by the Schlientz and Moore Funeral Home. The Final Salute Society, fellow veterans and families were there to support as well.

“Every veteran has earned their place at the National Cemetery,” said Sara Moore, owner of the funeral home. “I’m an Army brat. My dad served in the U.S. Army and we’ve had other friends and family that have, are also buried here at the National Cemetery.”

“So many vets are patriotic,” Galyon added. “As veterans, we care about our brother veterans and to do it on a patriotic day such as 4th of July, our independence was won on 4th of July, celebrated on 4th of July. You know, it’s important to do this today.”

Galyon said too that today signified the country’s promise that no veteran will be forgotten.
