Baby chimpanzee born at Detroit Zoo

The Detroit Zoo welcomed a baby girl chimpanzee born to Nyani, a 34-year-old chimpanzee, on July 4.

"Nyani and her newborn are doing exceptionally well as they adjust to this new chapter together," according to an Instagram post by the Detroit Zoo.

Nyani and her daughter are bonding behind the scenes and gradually being introduced to zoo's troop of 12 chimpanzees, according to the post.

The girls don't yet have access to the public areas of their habitat, but will once Detroit Zoo's animal care staff determine they are ready, according to the post.

The baby chimpanzee joins a baby penguin named Atticus born in April 2025, a baby gorilla named Motema born in August 2024, and a chimpanzee named Tai born in May 2023.

The community can expect to see a new water tower design in the next two weeks at the Detroit Zoo.
