Sights, sounds, and flavors of the El Paso County Fair
(CALHAN, Colo) — The sights and sounds familiar to the ears of locals in Calhan are back. From carnival rides and food to a rodeo and plenty of other entertainment, the El Paso County Fair is always fun for those who come down.
“Every single time it’s always a good time,” says Marcellus Rozdilsky, who attended the fair on Sunday.
The fair is now in its 120th year after the celebration started in 1905 when farmers in the area gathered to celebrate a successful potato crop. Even those in attendance at this year’s fair can’t help but love the starchy food that kick-started this annual tradition.

“Everything about them, the drinks that they make, how they taste with cheese. It’s great,” said Robert Scritchfield, who attended the fair on Sunday.
Each visitor has their reason for coming down to the fair, but Wyatt Sloan came down to watch the bull riding.
“‘I’m a bull rider myself and have been doing that for about four years now,” Sloan said.
“It’s just a rush of adrenaline.”
But beyond the rodeo, there is plenty of time for carnival rides and water gun races. Sloan and Rozdilsky had their plan for later in the night as to where they would start their carnival ride adventure.
“I’m thinking the zipper looks real fun, Sloan said. “I think that’ll be the first one that we go on.”
Some even make time to grab some food, like funnel cake.

“It’s just got the carbs, it’s got the sugars, it’s got everything unhealthy for you,” Scritchfield said.
For some, it’s all about having a good time, but for others, it’s about spirit and pride for community and country that makes the El Paso County Fair different from the rest.
“You have a lot of pride when you do something like this,” Scritchfield said.
The fair will run through Saturday, July 19.
