Open Championship leaderboard, second round updates: Brian Harman takes clubhouse lead

When Harris English made his par putt on the 18th hole late in the day Thursday, he ensured there'd be a five-way tie for the lead after one round. Another four golfers are just a shot back and another 10 after that are just two shots back.

Haotong Li grabs a share of the lead at the 2025 Open Championship

Haotong Li went out in 3-under 33 before making birdie on the 10th to join Brian Harman at 8 under for the championship just before 11 a.m. ET.

The 29-year-old from Hunan, China is a four-time winner on the DP World Tour and has had some seriously stellar performances in majors before, including a T3 at the 2017 Open Championship (when he was just 21 years old) as well as a pair of top 20s at the 2018 U.S. Open and the 2020 PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy will comfortably make the cut at the 2025 British Open Championship

World No. 2 Rory McIlroy will play the weekend at Royal Portrush, which he didn't do last time the British Open was held there.

McIlroy shot 2-under 69 in the second round on Friday to follow up his 70 on Thursday. He's 3 under for the championship entering the weekend, and as of 10:35 a.m. ET, he sits tied for 11th on the leaderboard, five shots off the lead.

Can Rory capture his sixth major title in his native Northern Ireland? So far, it's looking possible, but he'll have some work to do on Saturday.

Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland walks on to the seventh tee during day two of The 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club on July 18, 2025 in Portrush, Northern Ireland.

Heavy rain begins to fall Friday at the British Open

It is absolutely pouring at Royal Portrush, as a storm system carrying heavy rainfall rolled into the area just before 10:30 a.m. ET on Friday. Radar indicates that it could stick around for a while, but the intensity of the rain will likely begin to lighten up as the day goes on.

Scottie Scheffler gets his second round underway at the 2025 British Open Championship

The world's best player has teed off for his second round at Royal Portrush.

Scottie Scheffler missed all but three fairways on Thursday but still managed to shoot 3-under 68 and close the day just one off the lead. He begins his second round with some work to do, though, after Brian Harman posted a 65 to take the lead at 8 under.

But if there's anyone who can make up ground quickly, it's Scheffler, who is looking to capture the fourth major title of his career and the second this season. The two-time Masters champ won the PGA Championship in May.

Haotong Li throws a dart, taps in for birdie to get within one

Doesn't get much closer than this.

Li tapped in for birdie to get to 3 under on the day, 7 under for the championship and just one behind solo leader Brian Harman.

Brian Harman closes with birdie to fire 65 and take the clubhouse lead at the British Open

The 2023 Champion Golfer of the Year is feeling as comfortable as ever across the pond. Something about seaside links golf just brings out the best in the 38-year-old from Savannah, Georgia.

Harman played a perfectly clean round Friday at Royal Portrush, recording six birdies and 12 pars without a single blemish on the scorecard. He made birdie on No. 18 to card a 65 and take the clubhouse at Royal Portrush lead just after 9:40 a.m. ET.

Harman won by a whopping six shots at Royal Liverpool in 2023, dispatching the likes of Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day en route to hoisting the Claret Jug. The lefty went winless in 2024 and struggled to start the 2025 season before breaking through again at the Valero Texas Open in April, which he won by three shots.

Now, Harman again finds himself in the mix at the only major he's won before. He will enter the weekend firmly in contention, and maybe even in the lead, depending on what happens the rest of the day.

Rory McIlroy looking for a boost down the stretch

It's been quite the pedestrian day for World No. 2 and hometown hero Rory McIlroy, but two birdies in three holes on the back nine seems to have jolted him.

He's 2 under for the round through 13 holes as of 9:25 a.m. ET after birdies on Nos. 12 and 14. He sits at 3 under for the championship and four shots back of solo leader Brian Harman.

Rory missed the cut at the 2019 Open Championship, the last time the event was held at Royal Portrush, so he's already trending toward a marked improvement from his last performance in his native Northern Ireland.

He'll look to finish strong and go full steam ahead into the weekend.

Bryson DeChambeau climbing back up at the British Open after disastrous first round

LIV Golf superstar Bryson DeChambeau had a day to forget Thursday at Royal Portrush, where he shot 7-over 78, which included a total whiff on the par-4 fourth hole.

But golf is silly, so of course he'd be 5-under through 14 on Friday, right?

The two-time U.S. Open champion is on a hard charge to make the weekend, and he slipped inside the cut line just after 9 a.m. ET following three straight birdies on Nos. 12-14. He now sits right on said cut line — 2 over for the championship with four holes to play in his second round.

Stay up-to-date on changes to the cut line and all the players trying to make the weekend with our live cut tracker.

Rasmus Hojgaard fires 68 to take clubhouse lead Friday at the British Open

Rasmus Hojgaard is your new leader in the clubhouse.

The 24-year-old Dane fired a 3-under 68 on Friday to follow up his 69 on Thursday to enter the weekend at 5 under. He probably won't be the 36-hole leader, but he's safely inside the cut and firmly in contention after two rounds.

Meanwhile, his twin brother, Nicolai Hojgaard, is not far behind. He's 1 under through 7 holes so far on Friday, 3 under for the championship and just two shots behind his kin, four off the lead.

Could we see an all-Hojgaard pairing at some point this weekend? I think it's safe to say we're all rooting for that.

Welcome to the birdie party, Robert MacIntyre

The scoring conditions are markedly better than they were Thursday, with sunny skies and lights winds compared to yesterday's gusty, rainy weather.

Scotland's Robert MacIntyre is taking full advantage.

He's 5 under through 13 holes and he sits just two behind solo leader Brian Harman as of 8:45 a.m. ET. He made back-to-back birdies on Nos. 12 and 13 after shooting a 3-under 33 on the outward nine, putting himself in prime position to contend on the weekend if he finishes strong here today.

Brian Harman and Tyrell Hatton trading birdies on a sunny day at Royal Portrush

The sun is shining and the birdies are aplenty compared to yesterday, especially for Brian Harman and Tyrell Hatton.

Harman is working on a perfectly clean round with five holes to go. He's 5 under on the day, with five birdies and eight pars, including this one to give him a two-shot lead just after 8 a.m. ET.

But it wasn't long before that two-shot lead was taken right back to one, as Hatton answered with a beauty of his own.

Hatton is 3 under through 6 holes on the day, with four birdies offset by a bogey on the par-4 fifth.

Harman's hot start

There is currently a six-way tie at the top of the leaderboard at 4 under, with 2023 Champion Golfer of the Year Brian Harman joining the logjam thanks to a birdie-birdie start. Harman won earlier this year at the PGA Tour's Valero Texas Open and waltzed to the Open title at Royal Liverpool.

His fellow Georgia Bulldog, Harris English, is about to get his round underway. One of the 18-hole co-leaders, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, is already on the course. Marc Leishman has the hottest round of the day going at 4 under thru 13.

Second round weather report

If you don't like the weather at Portrush, wait 5 minutes and it will change.

The forecast calls for Friday's second round of the 153rd Open to be bathed in sunshine, but fans better enjoy it while they can. The official weather report states that there is a small chance of drizzly showers in the morning before heavier downpours arrive in the afternoon. Wet weather is expected to ease heading into the evening, with a brighter start to Saturday forecasted. Winds are expected to be changeable, with gusts of up to 16 mph and a high of 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Balls in the air

Hello and welcome to another edition of Coffee Golf if you're up early in the States. Here in County Antrim the sun is shining — for now. The grouping of 2009 Open champion Stewart Cink, Italy's Matteo Manassero and Australian Marc Leishman had the honor of being the first one's out at the Dunluce Course at Royal Portrush. Hopefully, they can set a better pace than Thursday when the pace of play threatened six hours.
