Famous Chicago burger joint opening location in north suburb this summer
One of Chicago’s most popular burger spots that draws lines around the block is set to open a location in the north suburbs this summer.
Small Cheval, a sister restaurant to the city’s famous Au Cheval burger joint but with a stripped down menu, will open at the historic building recently home to the former Depot Nuevo restaurant in Wilmette, at 1139 Wilmette Ave.
Neighbors may have seen the giant sign for Small Cheval go up last month, with an interior buildout underway.

An update from the village emailed to NBC Chicago Thursday said construction is nearing completion. The village added it anticipates the restaurant to open in late August or September.
“We’re excited to welcome Small Cheval to downtown Wilmette and look forward to their upcoming opening,” the email said.
Earlier this week, the burger and shake shop opened a new location in Logan Square in the former “The Freeze” space. Small Cheval also has locations in Wrigleyville, Fulton Market, Old Town and The Loop.
Plans for the downtown Wilmette outpost began in 2023.
According to the website, Small Cheval’s menu includes burgers, fries, fried chicken, milkshakes hand-dipped cones along with beer and wine.
According to the village, here’s what the restaurant is expected to look like:
